Mining Myths for a New Twist

I’m a huge vampire fan. And I can pretty much tell you all the traditional world rules – wooden stakes, sunlight , mirrors, etc. So when I settled down to build my own world for my Dark Realm series, I wanted to pull in some of the familiar but build a rich and unique history for my creatures.

I traced the legends of vampires through mythology, and of course, found the story of Lilith and her children, the lillum. Lilith exists in Judeo-Christian lore but her legend didn’t begin there. Unfortunately, the trail gets cold because written history only goes back so far. The farthest I was able to trace the legend was into Sumerian mythology. While researching there, I stumbled across the story of Inanna and her sister Irkalla—not relatives or descendants of the lillum, but there’s where Mr. Muse came into play.

I have a very logical side to my brain that loves research and tangible connections, and another that takes flights of fancy and builds connections between stories in my dreams.

Inanna began her mythological life as an ordinary girl who through jealousy and conniving sought to increase her power. She stole her sister’s husband. Then when her sister, in her grief, seduced the ruler of the Land of the Dead to become the queen of that realm, Inanna followed her there, hoping to steal away everything her sister had gained. But Irkalla got her revenge, forcing Inanna through a ritual of pain and depravity that ended with her complete subjugation to Irkalla’s will. Inanna failed to take Irkalla’s place, and to make matters worse, was trapped in the Land of the Dead.

Her crafty sister offered Inanna one chance to free herself, but she had to find one soul to offer up in her place. She lured her husband there, then left him stranded in the Land of the Dead.

From that moment on, the rest of the story was mine to tell. Inanna and her bitter ambition are a thread throughout all the stories. The last story in my Dark Realm series is finally here. Within its pages, you will see where Inanna lands, and in whose hands. Payback is a bitch.

Driven by insatiable desire, a werewolf will enter hell to rescue a princess captured by the Master of Demons…
Headstrong and proud—a royal creature of sinuous grace, all primal instinct and lethal beauty—the shapeshifter Gabriella has agreed to serve as emissary to the vampires who rule in the shadows of the New Orleans night. But she cannot resist the pull of the demon she glimpses on the other side of a mirror, and she is drawn to him hungrily, through a magical portal into the Land of the Dead. Now an eternal nightmare awaits Gabriella at the hands of a mesmerizing dark lord who satisfies her every erotic need…while slowly devouring her soul.
The powerful warrior wolf Guntram Brandt is responsible for the safety of the vanished princess he swore allegiance to years before. Yet it is more than a soldier’s loyalty that pulls Guntram down into the depths of nightmare—for Gabriella ignites within him a burning animal passion that must be satisfied.
But when offered an escape, will she follow her rescuer to safety—torn between her lustful obsession with the dark lord who has enslaved her and her fierce sensual attraction to the only wolf who could ever master her?

I'm a huge paranormal fan, not just vampires but shifters, witches etc. I read more paranormal these days than contemporary; I seem to got through phases but always come back to my first loves.

Wow! I neglected you all today in favor of pounding out some new pages. I'm very happy to see some friends from my loop and blog. And welcome to those of you who don't have a clue who I am! And hey, even my sister dropped by to say hello. LOL

I hope you will all give the story a try, but be warned, it's extremely erotic. I don't think demons are monogomous, and the couplings get rather creative.
