Guest: Kerrelyn Sparks

VampChix is pleased to welcome Kerrelyn Sparks to our cozy little spot on the Internets today!  Kerrelyn's latest, VAMPIRE MINE will be in stores in just a few weeks.  If the cover alone doesn't make you buy it, then know that it's got sexy vampires inside.  One lucky commenter will win a copy of THE UNDEAD NEXT DOOR, so show Kerrelyn some love in the comments!

SHIFTY CAREERS

As a paranormal romance writer, I’m known for my vampire comedies, but the Love at Stake series is also inhabited by a variety of shape shifters. The hero from Forbidden Nights with a Vampire is Phil, the werewolf, and the hero from Eat Prey Love is Carlos, the Brazilian were-panther.  Another fun shifter is Howard Barr, were-bear and former defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears.

In my make-believe world, it’s easy to write about a vampire during the day because he’s just laying there dead. Typically, the day shift is for the shifters, and their job is to protect the Vamps.  But not all shifters would want to work as bodyguards.  Some might want to lead normal lives during the day.  That means the guy in the cubicle next to you at work might turn furry when the moon is full.  Or maybe your doctor patches up wounds during the day, but inflicts them at night.

This led me to wonder—what kind of career would work best for a shifter?  Phil, the werewolf, comes from a ranching family in Montana.  Makes sense to place a pack of werewolves where you would expect to see wolves, right?  But when you think about it—a werewolf cowboy?  Wouldn’t his horse get a little skittish if it could smell a wolf on its back? And imagine a werewolf sheep rancher—what a nervous flock of sheep that would be!

There are definitely times when being a shifter would come in handy.  Say you’re in the Olympics, Track and Field events, running the 100 yard dash.  Wouldn’t it be great to be a were-cheetah?  And the hurdles—definitely helps to be a were-kangaroo.  Swimming competitions—you gotta be a were-seal or Selkie.

As for everyday careers—a were-bloodhound would make a good police detective.  A house burglar would be a were-racoon.  Your local pest control guy might be a were-anteater.  What kind of shifter would you like to see in a book?  Please leave your comment for a chance to win a signed copy of The Undead Next Door, the fourth book in the Love at Stake series.

Meanwhile, please keep an eye out for my next release, Vampire Mine, which goes on sale March 29th.  It features a Scottish Highlander Vamp, Connor Buchanan, and the woman he falls for--a fallen angel. You can read an excerpt at my website, www.kerrelynsparks.com.  Or, for a limited time only, you can download the free e-book, How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire, which includes a two-chapter excerpt from Vampire Mine.  The free e-book is available for Kindle, Nook, and Sony e-readers.  Please visit me at my website, or the Forum in the Vampire World of my website, or the Fan Page on Facebook

Just stopped by to say that I absolutely love this cover! And the vampire/fallen angel combo is really working for me. March 29th is marked on my calendar:)

Shifters? I've read some strange ones but my favs are the big cats, bears, and even dinosaurs. Strong. Tough. I like when they have some of the animal in their personalities.

A were-alligator that works as an animal control officer.

Not sure really how that would play out but it's kind of different. :)

LOVE the cover of Vampire Mine and can't wait for Connor's story!

I like all kinds of big were-cat shifters--lions, tigers, leopards, etc. They're sleek, slinky, and powerful.

I think a bird shifter, maybe en eagle, would be cool. It would be able to watch from the sky without anybody knowing. Love your books keep up the great work.

I would love to see a were-cougar. Set it in the west like Colorado, Arizona, Utah someplace you find cougars. I love your books and hope you continue to write for many more years. Thanks!

Hi Kerrelyn & Michele,

Michele, I first want to say you always have the best people on your blog for interviews. Kerrelyn is one of my many favorite authors.

When it comes to shifters I love anything that has to do with the big cats. Tiger especially, than of course Panther. I was so thrilled when Kerrelyn had Carlos in her books.

Good luck to everyone,

Teresa K.

I think a were bat(were bat) or something else that can fly. I think you could include some interesting scenes this way ;)

cinful1121 said...

I'm not sure to be honest. I have read about the more common big cats, bears, werewolves, etc... and then I came across a series with shifting dinosaurs that at first I was like oh hell no this is gonna be bad BUT they were really good! Oh and a shifter snake it was big and venemous so that was pretty cool. All in all I'd say something exotic that's not what people would expect.

Love your books you rock ;) Take care.

hey kerrelyn, i love your books!! i have read them all and i'm sooo...glad that connors book is finally coming out! he is my favorite character out of the whole series. AND I WOULD WANT TO BE THE TYPE OF SHIFTER THAT COULD CHANGE INTO DIFFERENT PLANTS! i know it sounds weird but it has the element of surprise and some plants are poison even to vampires!! you are an amazing author and i've bragged you up to many eaders around indiana and michigan!! have a great day!! <3 trisha rupert

I think a bird of prey shifter, maybe a hawk or a vulture would be great. A hawk shifter would be an excellent pilot, being intuitively aware of air currents, etc.

shipinomore said...

Love the cover!!!

My favorite shifters would be the birds, especially an eagle who has the speed and sharp eyesight to be a spy or military operative and also the dragons (awesome sight) who could be an arson investigator for the fire department or in the secret service.

I would like to see cats. As they are my favourite type of animal.

LOVE THIS BOOKS SO MUCH. I've fot my fingers crossed I win.

I so enjoy your series. The way you "helped" Ian grow up was fantastic. So looking forward to Vampire Mine.

I am currently enjoying shifters that are dragons. Different, yet sweet. Shelly Laurenston's are the funniest.

I absolutly love the shifters in the series. It is very easy to fall in love with the books. They make the action continue while the vampires are in their death sleep. I am in love with the story about Phil and Vanda, they are the most troubled and ment to be couple. Another shifter that I believe will make things interesting is adding a woman shifter like a lion and she falls in love with Gregory. Gregory is the goofy disco dancing charmer and she can be the serious strong leader that turns into a klutz near Gregory.

Stacy McKitrick said...

How about a multi-purpose shifter? Can shift into any animal it wants. That would be cool - and could blend in easily with whatever environment he/she were in.

I love the books - my daughter got me hooked. Look forward to reading them all.

Love all the comments. Everyone seems to love the big kitties. Saw a leopard last week in a zoo in the Bahamas-- he was huge and so powerful looking! The flamingos put on a show. They were trained to march in a show arena and followed the orders of the drill sargeant-- if he said 'about face!' they all turned around. Amazing, really! But a were-flamingo? He might have really skinny legs and knobby knees!

Can't wait til March 29th!! I think it would be cool to have a were-hippo. It could stay under the water for a really long time and hippos look harmless but can do some serious damage. rdhowell71 said...

Someone mentioned they never heard of were-whales. Then they are not reading the Otherworld/Sisters of the Moon series by Yasmine Galenorn. She definitely mentions an Orca Pod living in Puget Bay off the coast of Washington State. There are Selkies as well which are the were-seals. These are the ones who have to carry their seal skins around with them to be able to change when they slip into the sea. Also there was a mention in the anthology 'Never After' with the short story "Shadow of the Mist" by Ms. Galenorn of finfolk which are more commonly called mermen/merwomen.
