As a paranormal romance writer, I’m known for my vampire comedies, but the Love at Stake series is also inhabited by a variety of shape shifters. The hero from Forbidden Nights with a Vampire is Phil, the werewolf, and the hero from Eat Prey Love is Carlos, the Brazilian were-panther. Another fun shifter is Howard Barr, were-bear and former defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears.
In my make-believe world, it’s easy to write about a vampire during the day because he’s just laying there dead. Typically, the day shift is for the shifters, and their job is to protect the Vamps. But not all shifters would want to work as bodyguards. Some might want to lead normal lives during the day. That means the guy in the cubicle next to you at work might turn furry when the moon is full. Or maybe your doctor patches up wounds during the day, but inflicts them at night.
This led me to wonder—what kind of career would work best for a shifter? Phil, the werewolf, comes from a ranching family in Montana. Makes sense to place a pack of werewolves where you would expect to see wolves, right? But when you think about it—a werewolf cowboy? Wouldn’t his horse get a little skittish if it could smell a wolf on its back? And imagine a werewolf sheep rancher—what a nervous flock of sheep that would be!
There are definitely times when being a shifter would come in handy. Say you’re in the Olympics, Track and Field events, running the 100 yard dash. Wouldn’t it be great to be a were-cheetah? And the hurdles—definitely helps to be a were-kangaroo. Swimming competitions—you gotta be a were-seal or Selkie.
As for everyday careers—a were-bloodhound would make a good police detective. A house burglar would be a were-racoon. Your local pest control guy might be a were-anteater. What kind of shifter would you like to see in a book? Please leave your comment for a chance to win a signed copy of The Undead Next Door, the fourth book in the Love at Stake series.
