Guest blog with Lisa Kessler and Night Walker Giveaway

Hi everyone –

It’s great to be here on the VampChix blog!

In my new novel, Night Walker, our hero, Calisto doesn’t consider himself a vampire. In fact, he gets an attitude about it.

Although Night Walkers are similar to vampires, they are dead during the day, they drink blood to live, they have preternatural speed and strength, Night Walkers also have a few different traits that separate them.

When I was researching for the book, I really wanted a “new” vampire. I wanted something more tribal. All immortal blood drinkers couldn’t have originated in Transylvania, right?

I started digging into the oldest civilization I could find in the Americas… The Mayans. They believed blood was magic, and they didn’t hesitate to spill it. In fact, many sacrificed their lives willingly, believing they would live again. The Mayans even had a God for reincarnation.

So after lots of researching, Night Walkers were born. They live forever, drink blood, avoid sunlight, and enjoy preternatural speed and strength, but Night Walkers also shape shift into their “Spirit Animal”. Calisto’s spirit animal is a raven. A really large raven.

And unlike vampires, Night Walkers are actually alive at night. They breathe and have a heartbeat. They can enter houses without an invitation. They’re not afraid of garlic, crosses or holy water either. Since they’re descended from the Mayans, none of the church’s relics hold any power over them.

I hope that in the end, it gives vampire lovers enough of the traits they enjoy, and a few new twists to make Night Walkers memorable.

So here’s my question for you… How far can an author take vampire mythology without leaving you disappointed? Are there certain vampiric traits that are a MUST? Have you come across some that annoyed you?

I’m looking forward to hearing your answers…

Lisa :-)

1. How far can an author take vampire mythology without leaving you disappointed?

I love most of the vampire books that I've read regardless of their history or mythological traits. The only vamp books I've read so far that I didn't like were the Thirst novels by Christopher Pike. I honestly think the Buddhist/Hinduism references were a bit much. But then again, I had just taken a Religion 101 class and was in the middle of a Buddhist Traditions class in college and I may have just been suffering from Buddha/Krishna/Kali overload.

2. Are there certain vampiric traits that are a MUST?

Some of the characters Must be sexy, brooding males (think Zhadist from Black Dagger Brotherhood--YUM!)

3. Have you come across some that annoyed you?

I can't think of any traits that annoy me really. Each author takes the standard vampire mythos and transforms it into the story they want to tell. They use the traits that get the job done.

I just love vampires and, for the most part, haven't been subjected to any that have turned me off so badly that they've lost my allegiance.

I've had your book on my TBR shelf on Goodreads since July and come hell or high water I will read it one of these days (hopefully sooner than later!)

I follow Lisa on FB as Sapphyria. I am also her friend on Goodreads.

I once read a book with one winy vampire. He was so depressing I wanted to stake him and put him out of his misery. I get enough wine from my kids, I don't want it in my escapes. If your a vamp, embrace it!

Authors can take their vamps as far as they can for me. I love all the different variations. I have to admit, I don't like the whiney ones, either, and any sparkley vamps can wait outside for me. Preferably in the sun.LOL.

One thing I love about vampires and vampire fiction is that the mythology is so varied, there's almost no limit to how far it can be tweaked!

I prefer it when vampires aren't bothered by crosses or holy water or other religious symbols, since I've never thought vampires should be inherently evil. I also don't like when they can be repelled by garlic. That said, vampires should have some vulnerabilities. I like when they have super-human abilities (speed, strength, enhanced senses, etc.) but they shouldn't be all powerful.

Other aspects of vampire mythology, such as having no reflection, being dead during the day, subsisting only on blood, etc. are to me not as important to me as a compelling story with interesting characters. As I said before, there's almost no limit to how far a good writer can tweak vampire mythology!

The author can generally take me as far as his/her imagination goes. I love new twists on vampires. The only thing that might take me out of the story are inconsistency or perhaps if I don't like the author "voice".

Jus Accardo said...

I think there's a lot of room to twist things around and give the normal vamp myth a new spin. I haven't come across anything I would considering pushing the limits. It;s always nice to see someone put a fresh spin on things!

Hey, Lisa!
This is a great blog question. I love new twists on vampires--different cultures have different versions of vampires, so why not in fiction? And why wouldn't vampires, like other creatures, evolve to become better survivors?

Nina Croft said...

I do like new twists on the vampire theme, but at the same time, I read vampire books because I love vampires and consequently I want my vampires recognizable as vampires.

I think the one absolute must for me, is drinking blood. So I guess Calisto qualifies, even if he doesn't like the idea.

SandyG265 said...

I'm pretty open on almost any twist on the vampire mythology as long as it's well written.

I' like sun sensitivity but really only direct sun they can be up and about during the day just in doors. I'm pretty flexible with all the other traits, drinking blood kind of important but interested in any twists on that. I like your story, going to get it and read now. CMElizabeth@gmail.com

Hi Debbie -

Yeah the sparkling doesn't work for me either... If vampires are crazy all-powerful, I like them to have some weaknesses like sunlight...

And I love for a hero to at least have some weaknesses...

Hi Lil -

I agree with you that inconsistencies can make a reader crazy!!! If you establish that they can't go out in the sun, then don't tell me later they can put on SPF 200 and dance around outside... :)

You'd probably really enjoy Nina Croft's Break Out... It's a vampire sci-fi novella!!! Vampires in space in the future! So fun...

And your new Bloodlands series not only has a cool dystopian vampire, but other cool paranormal creatures... Love it!

I agree completely... What's a vampire if they don't drink blood??? LOL

And Calisto is fine with blood drinking, but he drinks to kill. No sips... :)

I like seeing what an author can come up with that is new and different for the vampire mythology, but it should make some kind of sense or at least make me believe that it could happen in their world. I think the vampiric trait that is a must is ingesting blood - however they do it, they need it to survive. The traits that annoy me just a bit are the religious ones. I'm not sure why a cross should harm a vampire, and I like it when the author does away with that one.

Hi Barbara -

You'll be happy to know, none of the religious relics affect my Night Walkers, in fact the hero, Calisto, used to be a priest a couple hundred years ago... :)

You know, I think its within a author's power to make us believe in what her characters can do, vampires or any other species. As long as they have weaknesses and dont have every power known to man, I am very happy. As for vampiric traits..I think strength, sex-appeal, the need to feed with atleast a slight weakness to sunlight are what I have come to expect. Nothing comes to mind that would be annoying. Thanks for the giveaway.

I think that they have to have human blood.

I like the mythology of the author's world to be explained in the books. Don't leave me guessing which traits you're sticking with or adding...just tell me.

Are there certain vampiric traits that are a MUST?

There must be some form of blood consumption. Otherwise, the term "vampire" wouldn't be correct. Other than that, I'm pretty open.

Have you come across some that annoyed you?

New powers suddenly appearing out of thin air. Evolution is great...but there should be a basis for these powers to come about.

Hi Lisa.
How far can an author take vampire mythology without leaving you disappointed? As far as they can without making the story unbelievable. And as long as the vamp is not whiny, I'll except pretty much everything. I like it when an author comes up with something new for their vamps, like being able to eat human food even if they get no nourishment from it.(Still need blood to survive) It helps them blend in with humans, etc.

Thank you for the chance to win.

Hi Everyone,This was how me and my Boyfriend became VAMPIRES. I got a guy from the internet called Mr. Smith who was a VAMPIRE so i told him that me and my boyfriend would love to become VAMPIRES so he asked me of my Name ,Country, Age ,State , address and asked me to pay the sum of $750 to send me his blood which i did immediately and in the next 3 days i got the blood sample through the DHL which me and my boyfriend took in the blood into our body and in the next 30 minutes we turned into a VAMPIRE so if you are interested in becoming a VAMPIRE. FIrST: Vampires is not at all like in the movies or books, Sure. I understand. You are young; you have the whole world open to you.
