Review: The Reluctant Vampire by Lynsay Sands

Book Description:

Harper lost his lifemate, Jenny, during her turn and has blamed himself for her death ever since, so he's rather happy for the distraction when Tiny and Mirabeau arrive with a young immortal in tow.

Stephanie McGill is a young newly turned, immortal who is being hunted by a mad no-fanger named Leonius. When Anders and Drina Argenis (Argeneau) arrive to help, Harper finds himself working with the beautiful young Spanish woman.

But things get interesting when Stephanie decides to take on the role of cupid and bring Drina and a reluctant Harper together. How much trouble could a newly turned teenage vamp be?

Review:

I've always enjoyed the Argeneau series and this was probably my favorite title to date. Anytime you have a long standing series you run the risk of growing bored by the sameness, something that has happened to me more than once. What initially strikes you as being creative and unique can easily wear down and become repetitious as each new couple falls in love exactly the same way as all the couples before them. For me, it's the characters that keep a series fresh and alive, which is something that Lynsay Sands does incredibly well. She consistently creates new characters to mix in with a deep recurring cast, giving depth to an extremely well thought world and lore. I read every new book because I genuinely want to know what happens to these vampires, and because the Argeneau world is so vast we are able to revisit popular characters and see what happens way down the road.

Drina and Harper are an amazing couple that put a new spin on the mating lore. This time Drina knows that she is mated to Harper but chooses to keep him in the dark so that he can get to know her first. She wants to give him time to adjust, maybe letting the emotions come more naturally. Harper has some serious baggage and starts to finally come alive when he starts hanging out with Drina. Lust definitely comes first, with the heart following later. I appreciated this twist and found Harper's vulnerability and kindness to be very attractive. How they both interact with Stephanie, guiding her while letting her be a teen, is what makes the secondary story so compelling.

Lynsay Sands has an awesome website that includes all the book information, reading order, and downloads of the Argeneau and Notte family trees.

YA Vamps and more in City of Fallen Angels

There are YA vamps and more in the fourth book of The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare.

City of Fallen Angels (Mortal Instruments, Book 4)

I soared through this book...L.O.V.E.D. it!

Oh, you want to hear more than that?  :)

This Goodreads description says it pretty well:
" 'He does make me happy,' Clary said. 'But he can't control everything in the world, Mom. Other things happen—' she fumbled for words; how could she explain that it wasn't Jace making her unhappy, but what was happening to him, without revealing what that was?" "In a world where everything went away from him eventually, she was one of the few remaining constants." Except for teasers, the fourth installment of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments romance fantasy has been strictly embargoed, leaving us clutching for word clues. A teen series that keeps readers on tenterhooks.

This fourth book in the series goes beyond battle of the previous books and deals with the aftermath of the big battle and what will happen with Clary and Jace.  And, now that we know what we know from books 1-3, how will it effect Jace.  And it deals a lot with Jace and the battle that is ahead of him.

Jace is fighting something very powerful, negative and downright scary when it comes to the final pages of this book.  I was left wanting book 5 immediately!  Oh Jace, my favorite of the series, is in mortal, peril and whatever other kind of danger you can think of.  Spiritual even?  Yeah, it's bad.  Really bad.

I can't wait for the next book to see how it all turns out.  I believe I've heard there will be 6 books total so we have a ways to go and Cassandra Clare releases them once a year-ish.  Maybe longer it seems...  She has other series going on as well.  That part, the slow TMI book releasing, sucks worse than a vampire.

Speaking of vampires, Sebastian comes back and he becomes something part vampire part demon and definitely part yuck.  Seriously, the visual image of this guy as I was reading was almost too much.  I can barely bring myself to rethink it to post now.  It's bad, like ghoulishly, devilishly bad!!

My favorite vampire of all in the series is Simon.  And he plays a part in all of this too.  Eeeek!  There was also a new vampire introduced and an old one made an appearance or two.  So actually, this book in the series is actually quite vampire-filled.  Simon is definitely involved and a part of it.  I won't say more!  Must read.  :)

And there are werewolves too!  Both old and new.  There's a surprise twist with the weres and somewhat involving Simon so it is action packed the entire book through.  My love of Jace's character almost made me forget it actually focuses on Simon a lot from the beginning as well.

My favorite quotes while reading this book were:

"I'm curious, but I'm not sure I'm that curious." ~Simon
"Love is a contradiction." ~Jace
"You are strong, you fight it, but it wears you down as the sea wears down the sand." ~Brother Zachariah to Jace
"Or maybe it's just that beautiful things are so easily broken by the world." ~Jocelyn, of Jace <3
"You are not trivial." ~Magnus
"You're all he ever wants." ~Alec

I found a cool website for information on these books at Mundie Source.  Fun!

Great story all around!  I definitely recommend.  Have you been reading this series too?  What other YA vampires have you been reading about.  I'm thinking about reading Cryptic Cravings, the latest of Vampire Kisses, by Ellen Schreiber pretty soon...
Vampire Kisses 8: Cryptic Cravings
I also have a couple other vampire stories I received for review so I'll share those soon too.  There are just so many good vampire books to read!  :)

Happy YA Vamp Reading from your YA VampChix-ster!

Guest: Kendra Leigh Castle

VampChix is uber-excited to host guest Kendra Leigh Castle today, who talks to us about the vampires in her story.  Her stories rock, and she does too (I had the pleasure of meeting her at the RWA conference a few weeks ago).  So show her some love in the comments, and you be entered to win a signed copy of her new release DARK AWAKENING!

Your Vampires Do What?
By Kendra Leigh Castle

In the last few months before my new book, Dark Awakening, came out, I got strange looks every time I would tell people what I was writing.  Not from my family…they’re used to the fact that I’m weird.  But other people.  It’s not about the vampires, either.  I’ve been surprised by the number of people who like a good vampire story!  No, it’s more my description of the vampires in question.  See, the vampires in my book can move faster than the eye can see, hurl bolts of psychic energy, turn to smoke, become bats, and (most importantly) can shift into big, black cats.
Yeah.  I write the X-Men of vampires.
The cat thing has been the most common source of the comment, “Um, really?”  Now, it’s true, I was a Saturday morning cartoon addict growing up.  But my decision to seriously twist traditional vampire mythology had less to do with my abiding love of the Thundercats and more to do with my desire t o create a vampire mythology that was truly mine.  Plus, I really like shifters.  And the great thing about paranormal romance is a lot of it is based in getting a wild idea and being able to say, “Why not?”
As you might expect, coming up with a fresh angle on the vampire is tough.  I needed to create beings who were recognizable, but not too recognizable.  Hints of classic, no sparkles.  And after a few random bits and pieces clicked in just the right way—a Celtic cat design I’ve loved for years, an excellent documentary about Cleopatra’s doomed sister Arsinöe, and a raging crush on Richard Armitage—I had them.
            The X-Vamps.
Okay, I’m kidding about that, though I have told people that my vampires are a little traditional, a little untraditional, and a little bit Highlander (I mean, they don’t chase one another around shouting “There can be only one!”, but the decapitation by sword thing found its way in).  My vampires, the vampires of the Dark Dynasties, live in a world of rigid castes in which the members of the highblood nobility wear the marks of their bloodlines on their skin.  With each mark comes a specific power, and the purer the blood, the stronger the power.  This system has left the vast underclass of mixed-mark lowbloods at the mercy of their rulers since time immemorial.  Ty, the hero of Dark Awakening, is one of these so called “gutterbloods”.  His bloodline is unusual, though.  His mark is pure, a trio of entwined cats, but his kind is both leaderless and powerless in the great scheme of things.  Ty is Cait Sith (pronounced cat-SHEE), a line tainted by Fae blood at its roots and possessed of the ability to become a big, sleek, dangerous cat.  That alone has condemned him: the highbloods tend not to like animal shifters.  It goes hand in hand with their hatred of the unruly and unpredictable werewolves.
As you might guess, Ty’s life as a vampire hasn’t been easy.  But then, his life as a human wasn’t either.  I do like to torment my heroes, poor things.
For all my joking about it, rest assured that the vampires of the Dark Dynasties are very much…well, vampires.  They can’t walk in the light.  They drink the blood of mortals.  The siring process is pretty standard, and these vampires are pale and beautiful with sharp, pointy teeth.  I have, however, made some adjustments.  Holy items don’t do a thing to them.  They don’t sleep in coffins.  They’re not “undead” so much as they’re just drastically changed and made immortal.  And then there’s the Highlander thing: decapitation is necessary to kill these creatures.  Well, that or incineration.  But my vampires carry knives and swords.
Weird?  Maybe.  But then, that’s why I love writing paranormal romance.  All the rules are breakable.  And that’s the fun!
Now, despite my love of vampires who aren’t exactly in the “classic” style, every reader has his or her preferences.  So my questions for all of you are, how do you like your vamps?  Dracula-style, wildly unusual, or somewhere in between?  What’s the one trait a character has to have for you to buy him or her as a vampire?
I’ll be around to talk all things be-fanged today, and one randomly chosen commenter will win a signed copy of my new release, Dark Awakening.  Thanks so much to Michele for having me here…and I’ll see you all in the comments!

Immortality – which type would you choose? Guest Blog and Giveaway with Nina Croft

I normally write paranormal romance, but when I set out to write my latest novella, Break Out, it was intended to be an adventure set in space (I’d just finished watching Joss Whedon’s Firefly, at the time). But it turns out that I really am addicted to vampires, so when it came to my hero, I wasn’t totally surprised when he turned up flashing a pair of fangs. What could I do?

Actually, the more I thought about the idea of a vampire in space, the more I liked it. After all, if vampires exist now (which of course they do) and they are immortal (which everyone knows they are), why shouldn’t they exist in the future? So Ricardo Sanchez, space pirate and vampire, was allowed to stay.

And in fact, a vampire fits very well into the overall theme of the Blood Hunter series, which looks at man’s fear of death, and his search for immortality—a subject that intrigues me. The truth is, I don’t want to die (ask me again in a few thousand years and I might change my mind), and I’m sure many people feel the same. So, one of the things that fascinates me about vampires is their immortality. Of course, some people might argue that vampires aren’t actually immortal, because they’re dead. But I reckon dead is a state of mind. And Rico is about as alive as they come. Born in the Middle Ages on Earth, he’s embraced the whole idea of immortality, though he’s had to accept a few hard truths along the way. Mainly, that getting close to mortals can break you, and that boredom is the worst danger an immortal can face. But why should Rico get bored? After all, there’s a whole universe out there just waiting to be explored.

But in my vision of the future, there’s another sort of immortality available. Break Out is set in a time where Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars. There they have discovered Meridian, a substance with the power to bestow immortality. Meridian is extremely rare and only available to a select few, and a new class has evolved – the Collective – super-rich and immortal, they rule the universe.

And finally, there’s the Church. While not everyone can afford Meridian, everyone wants to live forever, and religious beliefs had gained a new popularity. The Church of Everlasting Life offers a cheaper, if less reliable, alternative to immortality with its promise of an afterlife in paradise.

So which type of immortality you choose? Meridian, expensive but reliable (though the Collective are about to discover there’s an extra price to pay, and some of them are going to think that price is too high); the bite of a vampire, not always successful, but if it works, you’re set for life – or rather death (obviously this would be my choice). Or maybe you’d rather rely on faith and go for eternal paradise Church-style, not exactly reliable but free (apart from the odd donation to the Church’s coffers).

Or would you rather just die?

Let me know, for a chance to win a digital copy of Break Out.

Blurb for Break Out

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun!

Excerpt

Skylar wondered how much longer they would keep her waiting. She tapped her foot, impatient to get moving.

Excitement fizzed in her blood. This was actually going to work. She would do it. She had to. The colonel had impressed upon her how important this mission was—she couldn’t fail. Her future depended upon it.

The door slid open. Ricardo Sanchez―Rico, as the captain had called him― stood in the opening. He didn’t enter but lounged against the frame, watching her. He was alone this time, and Skylar forced what she hoped was a bimbo smile onto her face.

He didn’t return the smile. He still wore the shades, so she couldn’t see his eyes, but his mouth remained a compressed line.

She got to her feet, needing to move. Maybe the plan wasn’t going so well after all.

“Mr. Sanchez—Rico—”

“Sit.”

Had she really thought his voice sounded like warm honey? That one word cut through the air like ice. She didn’t even have to think about it. She sat right down. Her lips were suddenly dry, and she ran the tip of her tongue over them.

“Is there a problem?” she asked and decided that the squeak in her voice was quite allowable within the parameters of her character.

He strolled into the room, one hand resting on the laser pistol at his thigh, and came to a halt in front of her chair, far too close. He was tall. And broad. And menacing. She licked her lips again.
“Just a small one.”

“Well, I’m sure we can sort it out.” When Rico didn’t rush to agree with her, she decided to give the bimbo smile another try. Her dry lips stretched across her teeth in what she hoped would bring an answering smile from Rico.

He grinned, but for some reason it didn’t make Skylar feel any better at all. “Oh, I’m sure we can.” His smile broadened and the tip of one white fang showed briefly.

Skylar’s heart stopped. Then started again, so loudly she could hear the blood thundering in her veins.

Holy Meridian. What the hell was this guy?

Her mind flashed back to the rumors she’d heard about him, rumors she had ignored as too ludicrous to even consider. Just stories dredged up from the past.

She forced herself to take a deep breath. He could be any number of things. One rather large tooth did not mean he was a….

He reached up and slipped the shades from his eyes. His gaze locked with hers, and ice-cold prickles skittered down her spine. She’d been in some perilous situations in her time in the military, had faced off against some of the scariest bad asses in the known universe. But they’d all been human—or mostly human. Nothing had ever chilled her like the darkness she sensed lurking behind his eyes.

“Er—I just have to pop back to my shuttle for a moment.” She stumbled to her feet. “I forgot to—”

She closed her mouth as he continued to stare at her out of those crimson eyes. Who, or rather what, had eyes the color of blood?

He reached out a hand, placed one finger on her shoulder, and pushed her down.

Review: Skinners- The Breaking by Marcus Pelegrimas

Book Description:

Shapeshifters, vampires, and all manner of monstrosities are raining hell down on a small western town—which is why Skinner Paige Strobel is headed there with a band of Old World Skinners who have been battling monsters for centuries using antiquated, yet oddly effective weaponry. Meanwhile, Paige's sometime-partner/sometime-lover Cole Warnecki is being held prisoner by persons—or things—unknown: framed, tortured, and beaten for the slaughter of cops at a vampire warehouse in Denver.

For Paige and Cole, a search for answers has become a battle for survival. The future of unsuspecting humankind is balanced on a knife blade. And the Apocalypse is a certainty unless they can uncover the truth behind a terrible force powering monsters and hunters alike . . . and find out why—after horrific werewolf attacks in KC and bloody carnage in Philly—Skinners are suddenly, inexplicably, turning against Skinners . .

Review:

This is another stellar installment in the Skinners series, full of non-stop action that will literally keep you on the edge of your seat. The book begins directly after the events in Vampire Uprising so if you haven't read book 4 I would have to say...What the heck are you waiting for? Seriously though, I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series and move through the world as the author intended. You'll avoid feeling lost and confused, plus you'll have the benefit of knowing all the major players. One of the things that sticks out for me is how the author doesn't bore established readers to tears by rehashing every event from previous books. You get just enough information to refresh your memory, something I prefer when reading a series book, because nothing is worse than realizing that out of an entire book only about half the information is actually new. Not an issue here.

The Skinners world is a brilliant urban fantasy setting that mixes elements of horror with action adventure, and even has a bit of romance with the relationship/partnership of Cole and Paige. The Breaking has so many characters and plot twists to keep track of but I think this is one of the best in he series to date, despite the fact that Cole and Paige are separated for most of the book. That aspect of the story really drove home just how vital they are to the survival of the Skinners community, but it also gave the reader a chance to see how capable Cole can be on his own. And I needed to see that Paige is more than just a bitch on wheels. She is tough as nails but definitely has strong feelings for Cole and you are treated to a bit of that at the end. They are a fearsome and complex urban fantasy couple and I hope they stay together more in the next book.

As usual, Cole has some of the best lines in the book and I love all the classic music and pop culture references. It's sort of like how Supernatural always has a killer song when Dean is driving, or at the end of an episode, and how many of his comments refer to something going on in the "real" world or to some amazing classic tune. Cole is like that too.

Riding away from the warehouse that night in a SWAT van had ben one of the most terrifying moments of his thirty-four years on this planet. That was no small thing, considering all the horrific things he'd seen in those years. First there was the speedy ascension of dancing reality shows to the top of the ratings, followed by the slow death of old fashioned rock 'n' roll. Once he got his first look at a real werewolf, his world had gotten even worse. ~Cole, pg 44

Other books in the series:

Blood Blade
Howling Legion
Teeth of Beasts
Vampire Uprising

Guest: Kathryn Leigh Scott

VampChix is thrilled to welcome Kathryn Leigh Scott to our little nook on the web today!  Scott played the bride of vampire Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows, and has written a novel about a young actress in 1960s New York, who is a real vampire starring in DARK PASSAGES.  We're so glad she had time to write a bit about her book and what she's working on now (read on to find out if we'll see her in Burton's version of Dark Shadows).

Dark Passages is a very personal book. It’s a novel, and by no means a memoir, but I am writing about a place I remember well and a time that’s very meaningful to me. While none of the events in Dark Passages actually happened in my own life, I wanted to capture that period of great change and discovery that I did experience when I left my home town and went to the big city. The early 1960s was a time of great social change, anyway . . . and I chose to bookend my story with two significant events: the Cuban Missile Crisis and the assassination of President Kennedy, all of it occurring within a year and a month. And that space of time also marked my first year in New York.
True, I did grow up on a farm and move to New York with big dreams of becoming an actress. And I did work as a Bunny at the New York Playboy Club to support myself until I got my big break, a role on a new daytime soap, Dark Shadows. All of that is part of my setting, but it’s not my story.
The most important element in my story is Meg’s very secret life as a vampire living among mortals.  Everything that a young human girl would experience being away from home and family for the first time, exploring a strange, new city, living on her own, making new friends, finding romance and a first love in her life are all heightened by the very fact that Meg is a vampire, not a mortal. The dangers for her are far more profound. She has a powerful enemy she’s unaware of, who is bent on destroying her. And she’s entirely on her own. Who can she turn to? Does she have anyone she can trust and confide in?
When I joined the cast of Dark Shadows 45 years ago, I was a young ingénue. The story line was Gothic Romance. Soon the strange happenings in the remote seaside village of Collinsport involved vampire Barnabas Collins, played to perfection by actor Jonathan Frid. Barnabas saw in Maggie Evans, the young waitress I played, the reincarnation of his long-lost love, Josette DuPres. With a bit of time-travel, I soon began playing the vampire’s doomed fiancé in the 1790s. Josette DuPres was a delicious role, and I loved playing the romance and drama of their tragic, unrequited love.
I also steeped myself in vampire lore, this at a time when research meant trips to the library rather than a few minutes googling. But Jonathan, with the full support of creator Dan Curtis, bravely veered away from the standard movie depiction of a vampire. Jonathan gave Barnabas Collins dimension and human attributes. His Barnabas was a reluctant vampire, who despised his blood lust and the curse of immortal existence without his beloved Josette. After logging four years (and 1,225 episodes!) on Dark Shadows, how could I not be influenced by the story of a cursed vampire longing for mortal life?
Yet I, too, veered off in my own direction, creating quite a different world for vampire Meg Harrison. She’s young, still on a path of discovery, and eager to follow her dreams. She vanquishes one enemy, but another appears. She experiences a tragic loss, but there’s the promise of a new romance. I see much of Maggie Evans, the striving and resourceful young waitress I played in the first episode of Dark Shadows, in the yearning, ever-hopeful Meg Harrison.
This year, while we celebrate the 45th anniversary of Dark Shadows, Johnny Depp is playing Barnabas Collins in the new Warner Bros. film Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton. Thanks to the internet, it is now no secret that you may catch a glimpse of me in the film.  I could not be more delighted  that Dark Shadows is still a part of my life.
It is also true that the rights to my book, The Bunny Years, have been acquired by Imagine Television for potential use in future episodes of the NBC series, The Playboy Club. In September, Gallery/Simon & Schuster will be publishing a new edition of The Bunny Years, with a Foreword by Hugh Hefner.
What goes around, comes around, and this has been quite a year for me. In Dark Passages, I am writing about a world I know well, while also exploring a world I can only imagine.

Sabella or the Blood Stone

Renowned fantasy author Tanith Lee has written numerous vampire stories, taking different approaches to the myth in each work. To mention only a few: Her short work "Red as Blood," one of the best fairy tale retellings I've ever read, presents Snow White as a hereditary vampire and her stepmother the queen as a white witch trying to save the kingdom from the young princess's unnatural appetite. Lee's twisted Gothic romance DARK DANCE (1992), first novel in the Scarabae trilogy, centers on a woman victimized by a family from a blood-drinking species. The hyper-sexual hero, a parody of the dark, Byronic vampire aristocrat, wants her only as a breeding vessel. "Bite-Me-Not or, Fleur de Feu" portrays a very different kind of love story set in a world where a tribe of winged vampires besieges a castle, and every facet of the inhabitants' lives is shaped by fear of the monsters. The captured and imprisoned vampire, although apparently intelligent, can't speak and looks and behaves so inhuman as to be more like an exotic animal than a person. Yet a serving maid in the castle becomes fascinated by him, helps him escape, and runs away with him She sees him through the lens of the courtly love romances she has heard, while he thinks of her as a sort of pet.

Lee creates another type of alien vampire in the science fiction novel SABELLA OR THE BLOOD STONE (1980). (Warning: Major spoilers.) The narrator grows up thinking herself human but aberrant. As a Terran child living on an Earth-colonized world, Nova Mars, she stumbles onto ruins left by the original inhabitants. Her vampiric behavior dates from her discovery of a red jewel in the ruins. After years of drinking blood and sometimes killing, she meets a man she cannot and does not need to kill. Jace, brother of one of her victims, reveals to Sabella that she is actually an alien who, years in the past, took over the dying child Sabella's body and memories. Yet, because all the girl's thoughts and feelings live in this new form, the vampire, in a sense, is also truly Sabella. Jace reassures her that, while neither alien nor human, she is in some way both. Thanks to him, she learns to live without killing and to accept her past without self-destructive guilt. Jace reveals that he, too, found the ruins in childhood and became absorbed into an alien being. He alone can safely nourish her, for they evolved that relationship in their former life as members of the extinct species. Sabella speculates on how this relationship might have worked in the ancient past, when Nova Mars was an inhabited but dying planet: "Of the little water and little food there was, one would eat and drink, and when he was strong, the other would take from him the vital element which food and drink had made—his blood....A system that requires a careful pairing, a creation of partners, who could permit in love what could never be permitted in hate or greed." Learning this symbiotic relationship, learning to share in love rather than seize in greed, Sabella avoids succumbing to despair.

Her solution to the quandary of being a bloodsucking monster depends on her union with Jace, the one living person who can serve as her symbiont. Also, their relationship requires her to let Jace dominate her, at least temporarily, until with his help she will learn "a discipline beyond myself." This male dominance isn't meant to be permanent, though. By way of balance, Sabella foresees a future in which she will decide when and where to procreate the children who will revive their species. She also conceives an ecological vision of a new era when her offspring may revitalize, even resurrect the desert planet. She matures into one of many fictional vampires who discover the value of symbiosis rather than destruction of their prey.

Guest Blog with Karen Taylor and Hunger Beach Set Giveaway

(A tongue-in-cheek tribute to the women in Stoker’s Dracula)

In honor of the name of this blog, I decided now would be a good time to talk about vamp chicks. I don’t mean the ladies who love all things vampire, in print or on film, although, yes, we are fabulous. And I don’t mean the ladies who hunt vampires and other creatures of the night, although they almost always kick serious butt. And again, I don’t mean the ladies who interact with vampires, either as victim or as volunteer – I understand the appeal, but...

No, what I really want to talk about are actual vampire chicks – the supernatural women with fangs and the appetites to match. And specifically, what called me to write about them, and why I prefer to use them as my major, point-of-view characters, instead of offering them up as eye candy, cannon fodder or subservient thralls.

I suspect, ultimately, my fascination with the female of the species came from reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Countless times, as a matter of fact. And although I enjoyed the story and quite thrilled to the seductions of the Count, the characters I found myself most interest in were the women, starting with Dracula’s three wives. Who were they? What were their names? Why did they need his permission to feed? And what exactly did they do with all their free time while they were waiting for the man of the house to bring home a baby in a bag? Did they long for their husband to bring home a fourth wife, so they could at least play bridge?

And then there’s Lucy. Poor, poor Lucy, who was just a girl trying to have fun. Why shouldn’t she have as many suitors as she could handle and why couldn’t she take as much time as she wanted to decide who she would marry? It’s not as if the women of her time had much in the way of other freedoms. Unfortunately, when she picks the wrong suitor by opening up her window to the Count, she is doomed. The men who profess to love her pretty much line up to kill her, and they seem to take great joy in releasing her soul. Maybe it’s for religious reasons, but I have my doubts. Did they really have to do her in?

Don’t even get me started on Mina. A devoted, faithful wife, eager to learn new things and new technologies, ruined by just one encounter. “Unclean,” she sobs guiltily, when in fact she’s done nothing wrong. Why did she allow herself to get shut out so easily? And labeled impure, to boot? Maybe she should have crossed over the holy circle drawn by Van Helsing and join the wives waiting for her. Did Mina even know how to play bridge?

The more I wondered about these silly things, the antsier I grew. Stoker, of course, was a man of his times and his female characters reflected that time. But there were plenty of other, newer novels which reflected the same sentiment. After reading book after book, I never found what I was looking for. Equality. And perhaps just a little humor. So I sat down to write my first vampire novel, thinking that it was high time for the women to have some of the fun. After all, we are the deadlier of the species, aren’t we?

Deirdre Griffin didn't choose to be a vampire. But she is. And she's determined to make the most of her fate. For Deirdre that means surrendering to the raging hunger ignited by even the slightest whiff of blood a hunger that pulses through her body like a fever, demanding release. It means making friends in dark places and savouring every hot, salty, bitter, revitalizing drop of life force the night has to offer...

From Book #1 of HUNGER:

After the kiss, I buried my face in his neck. Now, I thought as I heard the blood pulse in his veins, Oh, please, now.

I nipped him at first, savoring the moment, my low moans echoed by his. Then when my teeth grew longer and sharper, I could hold back no longer. I bit him brutally, tapping the artery and was rewarded by the flow of his blood: hot, salty and bitter. He shuddered violently and fought to push me away, but his resistance was futile. Finally his struggles ceased and his body grew limp as I continued to draw on him, gently now, almost tenderly. I drank a long time, slowly, relishing the feel of my own body being replenished, then I withdrew.

Arising from the couch, I caught sight of myself in the mirror. No longer pale and haggard, my skin glowed with life and my eyes shone, victorious and demonic. A few drops of blood were trickling down my chin; I wiped them away with the back of my hand and turned from my reflection in disgust...

From Book #2 of HUNGER:

He was trembling violently under my touch, but that merely encouraged me and I spoke his name again.

"Mitch."

This time I connected. I knew he heard me and understood, his hands tightened on mine and he whispered my name. Then before I could react, he quickly dropped my hands, formed a fist and silently punched me on the jaw, striking me with such force that I fell to the floor.

As I pulled myself up, shaking my head and gingerly feeling my jaw, I saw him running from the room, pursued by a nurse and two orderlies.

I stood, swaying in the air slightly, oblivious to the uproar Mitch's action must have been causing around me. The noise level in the room rose, as if from a long distance. I could hear the laughing and crying and shouting of the rest of the patients in the room. But my eyes were fastened on the door through which he had disappeared.

What the hell did you expect, you fool, I thought, a passionate embrace, a warm welcome-back kiss? His eyes had been the eyes of one who looked on hell, and I had helped to put him there...

Karen E. Taylor is a horror/paranormal author, with eight published novels to date and an eclectic assortment of short fiction which ranges from vampires to ghosts to telepathic, romantic dinosaurs. She claims she starts out to write a "normal" story, but then her characters turn spectral or grow fangs or fur or wings. So she writes what she loves and hopes her readers love it too. She started writing her first novel (Beauty Like the Night) in 1988. It was that novel, published in 1993 under the title of Blood Secrets, that started Karen's career.

In real life, she is mother of two sons, has been married for 32+ years, and owned by two cats and a dog. In her spare time she makes candles and cosmetic creams/lotions. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Karen attended Grove City College where she earned a bachelor's degree in English Literature and Communication Arts. She currently lives in Los Angeles, but is planning a cross-country relocation this summer. Her newest book is entitled HUNGER: The Vampire Legacy and is an omnibus edition containing her first two novels (Blood Secrets and Bitter Blood).

Deep within the forests of the Pacific Northwest, two vampire coalitions battle for supremacy—Guardian enforcers who safeguard humanity and Darkblood rogues who kill like their ancient ancestors.

Alfonso Serrano is a hunted man. For months he’s managed to elude the Darkbloods, vengeful foes who won’t rest until he’s dead. But he still craves one dangerous temptation: Lily DeGraff, the sexy Guardian agent he’ll risk anything to protect.

Lily is a wanted woman. Her talent for tracking Sweet-a rare blood type that’s addictive to vampires-makes her a prime target for enemy capture. Her only hope is the stealthy vampire operative who stole into her bed...then left her in despair. Danger aside-Lily won’t let Alfonso near her heart again-until an irresistible hunger draws them back together...and into an assassin’s snare.

Review: Dark Passages by Kathryn Leigh Scott

Book Description:
Dark Passages is a coming-of-age story encapsulating the romance and innocence of JFK’s Camelot era and the tumultuous “dark passages” of Meg Harrison, a vampire raised by her mother to resist the temptation of human blood. Meg arrives in New York determined not to use her vampiric gifts to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. She joins the cast of the cult hit “Dark Passages,” only to face her nemesis, a beautiful 300-year-old witch bent on destroying her. Their rivalry leads to a final confrontation as the telekinetic vampire and spell-weaving sorceress engage in a spectacular battle for supremacy. It takes all of Meg’s wit and tenacity to defeat the witch and win the affections of a handsome young mortal with a secret life of his own.
Review:
A vampire, farmer, Playboy Bunny, and an actress! All in a days work for Meg Harrison.  Meg is trying to resist her urges as a vampire and just have a normal human life. Her take is that you don’t really know about vampires because she can function just fine in daylight, does not need human blood (She can survive on the occasional squirrel or bird), and seems like an ordinary girl. After high school she sets off to the big city to become an actress and begins her work as a Playboy Bunny in the notorious Bunny Club. While working she also goes to auditions and finally lands a part in the daytime soap opera Dark Passages. Things are going pretty good and she is able to push away her bodies need for blood, until a strange presence begins to cause trouble. Trouble in the form of a jealous witch. What will Meg do to keep this witch from destroying everything while dealing with what the witch has already taken from her? You've really got to read and find out! No spoilers here.
This book is not your normal vampire book.  It was a great twist on what you would typically read a vampire novel for.  The characters in the story don’t know that they are in the presence of a vampire at all and they are never in any vampire-like harm.  I thought it was a refreshing take on vampires, and it played out like the soap opera the characters were acting in.  The main character Meg was an average girl, not a blood crazy vampire, and her dramas just happen to be different from ours because she had to deal with paranormal activity that humans just didn’t understand. Oh, and her occasional blood needs!
The writing style was easy to read and the story flowed nicely. It sometimes felt like Meg was telling you the story directly and that you were sitting there listening. I also thought the characters and world were very well developed and full of details. Because the main story was set in New York it wasn't much of a stretch to imagine the setting at all.
~Anna here. Pardon the interruption but I just wanted to add that this book has the potential to appeal to a wide audience as it combines so many popular elements from pop culture, including the classic, groundbreaking television show, Dark Shadows, and the iconic Bunny Club from the 1960's. Also, I would easily recommend this book to both the YA crowd and any adult fan of vampire fiction.
Also, Kathryn has a lovely website and blog that you can check out for more information about Dark Passages, the original Dark Shadows, and the re-issue of The Bunny Years, which might be used as a source for the upcoming NBC show. Just click here.
