New Vampire Releases for August 2011

August brings a variety of vampires as portrayed by such writers as Susan Blexrud, Jeanne C. Stein, Carrie Vaughn, and Sherrilyn Kenyon. There is also Evolve Two, an anthology about vampires of the future edited by Nancy Kilpatrick. One more thing - I included Richelle's Mead's latest Georgina Kinkaid book, Succubus Revealed, because not only is it a terrific series but two of Georgina's best pals are vampires. Enjoy!

Now all but five people in the world think she is dead again, this time for good—immolated in a factory fire set specifically for her. Evy and Wyatt, her partner/lover/friend, can no longer trust their former allies, or even the highest echelons of the Triads—the army of fighters holding back from an unsuspecting public a tide of quarreling, otherworldly creatures—they can trust only each other. Because when the Triads raided a macabre, monster-filled lab of science experiments and hauled away the remnants, they failed to capture their creator: a brilliant, vampire-obsessed scientist with a wealth of powerful, anti-Dreg weaponry to trade for what he desires most of all—Evy Stone: alive and well, and the key to his ultimate experiment in mad science.

Guest: S.J. Wright

Please welcome S.J. Wright today (a little late; my fault) but she's here!  Her latest is THE VAMPIRE'S CURSE.

THANKS FOR TWILIGHT SYNDROME
By S.J. Wright

I never thought I would end up writing vampire stories.  I guess I always imagined myself as a historical romance author (if I ever summoned up the nerve necessary to contact an agent or a publisher).  But after I saw Twilight, I began reading vampire stories again.  In fact, my Kindle had about five new titles on it per week.  I’m just that kind of a reader, and I know there are other obsessive readers out there like myself.  Yes, I’m talking to you!
We are the kind of readers who gobble up dozens of books a month, who hate to put our e-readers down for even a few moments to go to the bathroom.  We finish one book and immediately pick up another one, usually in the same genre.  We need more.  We want to be lost in other worlds.  It’s a condition that the American Medical Association should take a serious look at, in my humble opinion.
But it’s probably a mild condition compared to the Twilight syndrome.  Millions of teenage and twenty-something girls suddenly believing that vampires sparkle, do just fine in the daylight, never sleep, and would like nothing more than to protect awkward girls like themselves from other nasty creatures of the night who have much lower moral standards.  Blood from animals?  Phooyee!  That’s disgusting.  What freaks.
The scariest thing is that they probably want their boyfriends to be just like Edward.  Hey there, girlfriend.  Here’s a little heads up for you.  Teenage boys think about sex all the time.  They say no to sex about as often as Charlie Sheen says no to publicity.  They’re not wired for denial like we females are.  Personally, I still love the story that Meyers told.  I’m with Team Jacob.  I’m a sucker for a hot guy with real emotions who I can cuddle up with on the couch without worrying about freezing to death.
Overall, Twilight syndrome has been a Godsend for “aspiring” authors like myself.  I don’t mind admitting that I’m still an amateur.  I have a lot to learn about writing.  Hopefully, that education will continue into the days when I’m old and forgetting where I put my Kindle (I think I did that yesterday).  But Meyers did a service to writers everywhere when Twilight syndrome took over the bookstore shelves in our local B&N.  She opened up the world of fiction to people who never would have cracked open a book unless their friends threatened them with the possibility of posting those horrible sleepover pictures on Facebook.  They opened a book.  Some of them are now obsessed readers like I am.  Some of them are recovering from Twilight syndrome and reaching out into other genres.  Zombies.  Shifters.  Fairies.  Doesn’t matter.  They’re finding new worlds.  They’re learning about other kinds of people.  It’s an exercise in opening new worlds.  It’s the best gift you can ever give anyone.  So thank you, Stephenie Meyers.
What is one book that has changed your life or really opened you up to the world of reading?

S.J. Wright has been writing fiction for many years, but only recently introduced her work to the world at large.  In February of 2011, she published The Vampire’s Warden, the first book in the Undead in Brown County series.  At the end of June, she released the second book in the series, The Vampire’s Curse, which has become a top seller in Amazon’s Horror category and in Vampire Romance.  If you would like more information about S.J. (Stephanie), please visit her website at www.sjwrightbooks.com.  She’d love to hear from you.

Guest: Jeffe Kennedy

VampChix welcomes Jeffe Kennedy today with her hot, new vamp rom, FEEDING THE VAMPIRE.  She's got a copy of the book for one lucky winner, so show her some love in the comments!

I have a confession to make.
This is the first vampire story I’ve ever written.
It’s not that I don’t love vampires. I do. I’ve loved them since Louis agonized his way into my 11-year-old heart via the Science Fiction Book Club selection of the month. After that, I read every vampire story I could get my little paws on. For those keeping score at home, that’s over thirty years of vampire stories.
It should come as no surprise then, that I dreamed about Ivan. The opening sequence of Feeding the Vampire is straight from my dream. I still remember how it felt, his teeth, the blood draining away.
That’s the lure, isn’t it? The deep sensuality of being actual food for another creature – in a way that you can survive. That you can do again. And again. It’s the ultimate desirability, that he must have you to survive. In turn, you offer yourself to be consumed, give of your very life’s blood, the pain and the pleasure of it all.
In all those stories, over so many years, from so many imaginations, the vampires vary. Some are monsters, others “vegetarians.” They are urbane and wealthy. They’re scuttling parasites of the night. A writer friend of mine who doesn’t read vampire stories, but wanted to write one, asked me what happens when a vampire doesn’t eat. I don’t think she believed me when I told her there were as many answers to that question as there are vampire stories.
What I always come back to is the immortality. Vampires are humans who are made into something more, something immortal, for better or worse. Perhaps in some ways I’ll always go back to Louis, who never enjoyed his new life; to Lestat, who reveled in it; to poor, doomed Claudia. They will always be larger than life in my mind.
That’s how I like my vampires.

Read an excerpt here.

Blurb:  Through good luck and healthy cowardice, Misty has survived the earthquakes that have torn the world apart, but has no skills to speak of. Or so she thinks. She does have blood, and someone must feed the vampire who has offered his protection and strength in exchange for sustenance. Feeding Ivan is a priority, and Misty finally serves a purpose. But when she awakens tied to his bed, an unwilling gift to Ivan from the townspeople, she discovers he has hungers other than blood. Hungers he expects her to satisfy in the most carnal manner. Under his seductive persuasion Misty discovers she has the power to sustain Ivan in all ways, while experiencing unspeakable pleasure herself.

The Light Side and the Dark Side of Vampires
by Michelle Rowen

For five books, I wrote about the lighter side of vampire life. I suppose, in a way, my paranormal romance series, Immortality Bites, was a bit of a parody of vampires in general, although I did personally take the story and characters more seriously than that. I got to play with expectations and established myths by having vamps go out in sunlight (although they needed sunglasses because it was bright), they mixed their blood with alcohol in vampire nightclubs, some got their fangs filed down to cosmetically fit in better with humans, and they would tuck tail between legs and run if there was a vampire hunter around. I mean, my first title in this series was the beyond adorable Bitten & Smitten. These were obviously not vampires that tore the throats out of innocent victims. Well, not most of them, anyway.

These vampires were basically humans who needed blood to survive. They weren’t necessarily evil -- unless they’d been evil as humans. It was my way of saying, “who is the real monster?” Someone with the stigma of being a monster through no fault of their own (the vampire)? Or someone who chooses daily to do evil things and hurt other people for their own gain (the vampire hunter)?

I had a lot of fun with that series. So much that I’ve resurrected my heroine, Sarah Dearly, who will be the main character of my new paranormal mystery series that starts next August with Blood Bath & Beyond. I love funny vampires and Sarah cracks me up like no other character I’ve ever written.

But I guess I have a dark side, too. Because after playing on the light side of the genre, I wanted to dip my toe into the dark waters of vampires. My favorite genre to read is urban fantasy and I used to love horror novels. I wanted to create some vampires that didn’t enjoy cocktails at midnight while hiding their fangs from the general public. I wanted to write some vampires that, if you discovered their secret, they would be more than happy to rip your throat out with a smile on their face and a song in their hearts. (Cue evil laughter).

Of course, I couldn’t make (read: didn’t want to make) that sort of vampire the hero or heroine. So instead, I created a human heroine named Jillian who was thrust into the dark world she never knew existed when she was injected with a formula that turned her blood both poisonous and irresistible to vampires. I gave her a dhampyr protector, one whom she didn’t necessarily trust for a while. And, since I do love that question of “nurture or nature” when it comes to breeding evil, I also have a vampire who is both unrepentantly deadly but shows some heroic traits at the same time. There might not be quite as many laughs in my Nightshade books as there were in my Immortality Bites series, but both were a lot of fun to write and gave me the chance to stretch my vampire-lovin’ legs a bit.

My question to you is this -- do you like your vampires dark or light? Villains or heroes? Romantic or scary? Or are your favorite vamps a mix of all of the above?

I’m giving away a signed copy of my latest (dark side!) vampire release, Bloodlust, to a randomly chosen commenter. Good luck!

Bloodlust (Nightshade #2) – Berkley Sensation, July 2011

For those who feast on blood, Jillian Conrad is a fatal attraction. After being injected with a serum that made her blood both irresistible and deadly to vampires, she was used as a pawn to assassinate the vampire king. Now, the vampires want her eliminated.

Hunted and unable to return to her old life, Jillian desperately seeks to prevent the poison in her veins from killing her. And she must find a way to help her dhampyr protector, Declan, whose exposure to the serum has split his personality into one part uncontrolled desire, and one part stone cold killer.

But an even greater danger is rising. The Amarantos — a secret society of vampires — is seeking the infant daughter of the slain king to complete their quest for true immortality. And if they succeed, no one, living or undead, will escape the darkness.
