All Places That Are Not Heaven: Tales of Adrian Talbor and Genevieve de Monet
by Anne Fraser
By Light Unseen Media, September 21, 2011

Adrian Talbot is among Anne Fraser's most morally ambiguous, disturbing and colorful creations. A contemporary of Shakespeare, Adrian was the son of a prostitute who was put to work in a brothel himself as a child. A gift for acting and a strikingly beautiful face helped him escape that sordid world, assisted by the mentorship of playwright Christopher Marlowe and Adrian's own pride and ego.

In 1600, as plague rages through London, Adrian approaches a wealthy but mysterious aristocrat on behalf of his theatre troupe, who need a patron so they can leave the city. The nobleman is one of several vampire elites in London, who agrees to patronize the troupe if bisexual Adrian will become his bondslave. Soon Adrian is a vampire himself. Anne introduced Adrian to her readers in a series of stories set in present-day Toronto, where Adrian Talbot poses as a professor at the University of Toronto. He becomes involved with a grad student, Jake Fowler, who pays an unexpected price for agreeing to help Adrian establish himself as master vampire of Toronto (or so he thinks).

In "Speak Easy," Adrian falls in love with a mobster in 1920s New York City, and finds a surprising way of disguising their relationship. Anne once called this story "the best damn thing I ever wrote." The final two stories in this collection focus on Genevieve de Monet, familiar to readers of Gideon Redoak as Gideon's savior, mentor and dearest friend. Here we learn a bit more about her life apart from the Brotherhood of Darkness. This second volume of Anne's short fiction offers readers a wider view of her complex and vivid fantasy universe.

Complicating matters are Madison's burgeoning feelings for both sexy vampire Colin Reddy and fellow "beater" detective Mike Notchey. The stakes have never been higher as Madison and the vampires race to solve the mystery and stop the killer.

Blood and other Cravings
edited by Ellen Datlow Tor Books;
First Edition edition (September 13, 2011)

For this brilliantly original anthology, Ellen Datlow has commissioned stories from many of the most powerfully dark voices in contemporary horror, who conjure tales of vampirism that will chill readers to the marrow.

In addition to the traditional fanged vampires, Datlow presents stories about the leeching of emotion, the draining of the soul, and other dark deeds of predation and exploitation, infestation, and evisceration…tales of life essence, literal or metaphorical, stolen.

Seventeen stories, by such award-winning authors as Elizabeth Bear, Richard Bowes, Kathe Koja, Margo Lanagan, Carol Emshwiller, and Lisa Tuttle will petrify readers. With dark tales by Laird Barron, Barry Malzberg and Bill Pronzini, Kaaron Warren, and other powerful voices, this anthology will redefine the terror of vampires and vampirism

The Cliff Road Chronicles: Tales of the Brotherhood of Darkness
by Anne Fraser
By Light Unseen Media, Sept. 21, 2011

There are many kinds of love...but all of them are immortal.

Gideon Redoak was Anne's only full-length novel, but it comprises a mere fraction of her fiction. She continued the story of Gideon and Joshua, and their friends sharing the property on the coast of Maine, in dozens of sequential stories and novellas. The narrative took place in real time, with each story set at the time it was written, so children age and events unfold accordingly. The Cliff Road Chronicles follow the further adventures of the characters introduced in the later chapters of Gideon Redoak, referred to collectively as "The Brotherhood of Darkness" or more cheerfully, the "Cliff Road Crowd."

The first group of stories develops the relationship of Gideon and Joshua, which is not a smooth path. Although they become engaged and then married, each of them is confronted with personal crises that challenge their love for each other and their ability to maintain their life together.

The second group of stories, also placed in chronological order, focus on other members of the Brotherhood. Sometimes humorously, sometimes very seriously indeed, Anne explores the fortunes of vampires Alex Goldanias and Francis, mage Ray Griffin, and the Druid Fairlawn family, among others.

Filled with magic, fervent emotion, suspense, harsh reality and sometimes tongue-in-cheek silliness, The Cliff Road Chronicles will entertain and tantalize readers new to Anne Fraser's stories as well as fans of Gideon Redoak.

With the help of her “aunt”—half-werewolf, half-vampire Riley Jenson—and an Aedh named Lucian who may have lost his wings but none of his sex appeal, Risa must pursue whatever shadowy practitioner of blood magic is seizing souls, and somehow stop her father . . . before all hell breaks loose.

Guest: Bertena Varney

VampChix welcomes Bertena Varney to the hot spot today!  Her latest is LURE OF THE VAMPIRE, A Pop Culture Reference Book of Lists, Websites, and "Very Telling" Personal Essays.  A great reference book for the vampire fan or authors.  It's concise enough to assist you in finding links to what you are looking for without being too cumbersome and confusing.  Now, here's Bertena!

Hi everyone and thanks for having me here today. I am going to talk about my new book, Lure of the Vampire. At first glance everyone thinks that it’s a vampire romance book. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but it’s not an accurate description.
So, what is Lure of the Vampire?
Lure of the Vampire is a pop culture reference book for fans, writers, and students of the vampire. I began the book discussing the mythology of the vampire and then moved on to the historical vampires where I not only discuss Vlad Tepes and Elizabeth Bathory but other serial killers throughout time that have killed in a vampiric fashion and have gained the name of the vampire. In this section Denise Verrico, a modern science fiction vampire author and I discuss the different mythologies of the vampire. We provide websites and more for those that are interested in learning more can research this further. There are also fun lists dealing with how to become a vampire and how not to become a vampire.. depending upon your wish.
The next sections discuss the literature, movies, and television show that deal with vampires. We begin with Polidori’s Vampyre, LeFanu’s Carmilla, Prest’s Varney the Vampire, and Stoker’s Dracula. There are essays here on the lack of black vampires in pop culture, Dracula’s life in film, the romance of vampires and a lot more.
The rest of the book deals with topics that are in some way new to many vampire books- children’s vampires, vampire cyberworld, recreation and games, educational classes, and of course interviews with modern vampires in the subculture including a vampire priestess, magician, and the council that helps rule over the culture to ensure that both the vampires are safe as well as those who are interested in the culture.
Lure was an adventure in writing. It began as a college master’s paper and grew into a huge research project. I think I finally decided to take my research, my paper, and my interest of the vampire and turn it into a reference book was when I had several author friends emailed me questions about different facts about the vampire that they could use in their book. I heard many times, “I wish we could find these answers all in one place. “ I then decided that maybe a book was a good idea.
So, Lure was born. I added the websites that I found while writing my paper as well as educational resources that I found. For, example The Dracula Society and Elizabeth Miller were great resources on Dracula and led me to other professors that taught classes dealing with vampire literature, movies, books ,etc.
It is a very quick grab and is not as large as some other books but includes many resources for vampire fan, author and more.
Does anyone have any questions about the book? Please comment below and I will answer them.

I am currently at ScareFest, a huge Horror and Paranormal Convention where Elvira is the guest star and I am the horror guest speaker.

Upcoming vamp books to watch for!

Playing a scantily clad vampire victim in an off-Broadway play, struggling actress Esther Diamond now may be the target of someone who claims to be a genuine bloodsucker...

Even a vampire has to face her inner demons…

Kat Redding is the very thing she hunts: a vampire, thirsting for blood, capable of killing any creature unlucky enough to get in her path. The difference is, Kat kills her own kind in order to protect human Purebloods. She’s good at what she does. Good enough to earn the nickname Lady Death—and the enmity of every bloodthirsty being around. But now a vampire Count is intent on merging his House with a werewolf cult to create a force of terrifying power.

Kat can’t allow that to happen. Even if it means taking on a den of weres and a vampire more ruthless than any she’s encountered before. She has the weapons, the skill, and a few allies. But that may not be enough to eliminate the Count before her own dark nature rises to the surface—and costs her whatever is left of her humanity…

For three years, Miranda Grey-Solomon has kept her role as vampire Queen of the South separate from her Grammy-winning music career. But now, her dual lives are starting to collide, threatening everything Miranda and David, her Prime, have worked for.

To make matters worse, the entire Signet Council has descended upon Austin for its ten-year summit, bringing with it Prime James Hart of the Northeast, a sworn enemy come to take his revenge on those who defied him. As Hart’s machinations lead to outbreaks of violence across the South, Miranda and David receive an unexpected offer of help from David’s sire, an ancient and powerful vampire with knowledge that may be their salvation – or their doom.

This next one is NOT vampire, but I LOVE the cover, and it has a very vampish look.

Have you ever had the feeling that you've lived another life? Been somewhere that has felt totally familiar, even though you've never been there before, or felt that you know someone well, even though you are meeting them for the first time? It happens. In 2073 on the remote and secretive island of Blessed, where rumour has it that no one ages and no children are born, a visiting journalist, Eric Seven, and a young local woman known as Merle are ritually slain. Their deaths echo a moment ten centuries before, when, in the dark of the moon, a king was slain, tragically torn from his queen. Their souls search to be reunited, and as mother and son, artist and child, forbidden lovers, victims of a vampire they come close to finding what they've lost. In a novel comprising seven parts, each influenced by a moon - the flower moon, the harvest moon, the hunter's moon, the blood moon - this is the story of Eric and Merle whose souls have been searching for each other since their untimely parting. Beautifully imagined, intricately and cleverly structured, this is a heart-wrenching and breathtaking love story with the hallmark Sedgwick gothic touches of atmosphere, blood-spilling and sacrifice.

He lives to kill monsters. He keeps his city safe. And his silver hollow-points and back-from-the-dead abilities help him take out any kind of supernatural threat. But now an immortal evil has this bad-ass bounty hunter dead in its sights…

Ever since a monster murdered his family, Deacon Chalk hunts any creature that preys on the innocent. So when a pretty vampire girl “hires” him to eliminate a fellow slayer, Deacon goes to warn him—and barely escapes a vampire ambush. Now he’s got a way-inexperienced newbie hunter to protect and everything from bloodsuckers to cursed immortals on his trail. There’s also a malevolent force controlling the living and the undead, hellbent on turning Deacon’s greatest loss into the one weapon that could destroy him…

It's Titanic meets 30 Days of Night.

When the survivors of the Titanic are picked up by the passenger steamship Carpathia, they thought their problems were over.

But something's sleeping in the darkest recesses of the ship. Something old. Something hungry.

The pages of history are written in the blood of the undead…
A woman’s quest for the truth…
A medieval icon that holds the clues…
An ancient book with the power to shake Christianity—and humanity itself…

Caroline Clifford’s bland life as a London tour guide flips upside down when her beloved uncle is brutally murdered at a Bulgarian archeological site. While traveling to recover his remains, she meets a man who corresponded with her uncle. Jude Barrett is a biochemist on a mission—to eradicate the world of vampires…
At first, Caro is dismissive of Jude’s beliefs, but she can’t ignore the signs around her—the human bites on her uncle, the strange men following her, the anguished cries after sundown. Strange anagrams on her uncle’s passport lead her and Jude to a cliff-top monastery in Greece, where a shattering revelation connects a relic Caro inherited from her parents to an age-old text on immortality—and an enigmatic prophecy that pits the forces of darkness and light in a showdown that could destroy them all…

Guest blog with Lisa Kessler and Night Walker Giveaway

Hi everyone –

It’s great to be here on the VampChix blog!

In my new novel, Night Walker, our hero, Calisto doesn’t consider himself a vampire. In fact, he gets an attitude about it.

Although Night Walkers are similar to vampires, they are dead during the day, they drink blood to live, they have preternatural speed and strength, Night Walkers also have a few different traits that separate them.

When I was researching for the book, I really wanted a “new” vampire. I wanted something more tribal. All immortal blood drinkers couldn’t have originated in Transylvania, right?

I started digging into the oldest civilization I could find in the Americas… The Mayans. They believed blood was magic, and they didn’t hesitate to spill it. In fact, many sacrificed their lives willingly, believing they would live again. The Mayans even had a God for reincarnation.

So after lots of researching, Night Walkers were born. They live forever, drink blood, avoid sunlight, and enjoy preternatural speed and strength, but Night Walkers also shape shift into their “Spirit Animal”. Calisto’s spirit animal is a raven. A really large raven.

And unlike vampires, Night Walkers are actually alive at night. They breathe and have a heartbeat. They can enter houses without an invitation. They’re not afraid of garlic, crosses or holy water either. Since they’re descended from the Mayans, none of the church’s relics hold any power over them.

I hope that in the end, it gives vampire lovers enough of the traits they enjoy, and a few new twists to make Night Walkers memorable.

So here’s my question for you… How far can an author take vampire mythology without leaving you disappointed? Are there certain vampiric traits that are a MUST? Have you come across some that annoyed you?

I’m looking forward to hearing your answers…

Lisa :-)

Guest: Amanda Greene

VampChix welcomes Amanda Greene today!  Her current vampire romance is CARESSED BY MOONLIGHT, and she's soon to release CARESSED BY NIGHT.

I have a secret I would like to share.
I’m hopelessly attracted to bad boys, from Michael Corleone to ruthless Blade.
I think that is the reason why I’m head over stilettos for vampires and write paranormal romance.
The attraction began innocently, as all do. I met my first vampire when I read teen vampire romance, Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde. But it wasn’t until Aubrey, from Amelia Atwater-Rhodes’ book Demon in my View, that I fell in love with the sweetly tormented, seductive creatures of horror.
As I read more and more my tastes turned from young adult to pure romance. The first full-fledged paranormal romance I read was Christian Feehan’s Dark Magic. That book’s spine sports the most wear and tear on my shelf. The leading man, Gregori, is everything a vampire should be. He gives a girl the chills, triggered by both fear and passion. After devouring Feehan’s Dark series, I moved on to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters, J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brother Hood, and many others.
So, who are my favorite bad boys?
Well, I’ve already listed two out of my top five all time favorite vampires. The third would be Anne Rice’s Armand. I love that Antonio Banderas played Armand in Interview With the Vampire – never seen a sexier vampire on the big screen.
Next would be Zsadist from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. He is savage, sinister, and alluring.
Number one would be Rehvenge, another of J.R. Ward’s leading men. Rehvenge is dangerously exotic, lethal, dark, powerful, confident, totally erotic, completely scrumptious, and pure sex. In my opinion, he is the ultimate bad boy – mafia and vampire all wrapped up in a sexy package. If he were real, my husband would have something to worry about. Though, truth be told, my husband was no saint before we met and I absolutely love my tall and sexy military man.
I write paranormal romance because I am drawn to the darkly seductive creatures of myth such as vampires. I want my characters to embody frightening beasts of folklore with a passionate, desirable twist.
Caressed by Moonlight is the first paranormal romance that I have published.  Dorian Vlakhos is a deliciously sexy vampire king. Tall, built, with dark hair and “…magnificent eyes. Those fathoms of blue (are) like the sea after a tremendous storm, piercing, penetrating, and exotic.” Dorian is the first bad boy featured in my Rulers of Darkness series and his book, Caressed by Moonlight, is currently available on Amazon, Amazon Kindle, Nook, and Lulu.com.

Now, here is my question to you: Who is your favorite bad boy?

My current release, Caressed by Moonlight (Rulers of Darkness #1):
Dorian Vlakhos is no ordinary aristocrat. He is a vampire king, who will do anything to save his clan from complete annihilation, before an ancient curse can claim his immortal life.

Penniless and orphaned, Victoria Kingston has nothing to bring to a marriage, yet she must shackle an unsuspecting gentleman into marriage by the end of the month or forfeit her rights as guardian of her younger sister. With the help of her dearest friend, Victoria begins her hunt, and vows to stay far away from the dark, mysterious, Dorian Vlakhos.

After meeting the beautifully innocent Miss Kingston, Dorian had to have her. He would
do absolutely anything to make Victoria his. One sweet stolen kiss would bring them together while a force, more powerful than any vampire, would bind them for all eternity, but treachery, war, and death rule Dorian’s dark world and Victoria would be fortunate to survive.

Review: THE RIFT WALKER: Vampire Empire book #2

VAMPIRE EMPIRE: BOOK TWO: THE RIFT WALKER by Clay & Susan Griffith.  If you can get past the gorgeous cover art long enough to read the story, you'll fall in love all over again with Adele and Greyfriar.  I confess I'm a cover-flipper-backer.  When I read, I like to keep looking at the cover, because the artist, I feel, perfectly captures what I think the hero and heroine look like. Kudos, to the PYR art department for creating such amazing covers for both the books so far in this series!
This second book in the Vampire Empire series continues the growing love story between the two protagonists, but it is more focused on the political dealings surrounding them.  Normally, my eyes glaze over reading stuff like that, but the Griffiths make it informative and interesting without ever overwhelming or taking away from the meat of the story, which is the exciting action scenes, the gorgeously-detailed settings, and the emotional connection between the main characters.
It seems an impossible task to write a sequel to the first book, The Greyfriar, but all I can say is, 'well done'.  And I look forward to the third in the series (which I hope we readers won't have to wait another year to read).
Beautifully rendered with touches of steampunk, adventure, horror, and romance, THE RIFT WALKER is a must read!

Derek Clendening Guest Blog and The Vampire Way Giveaway

Very often I’m asked why I would a story about vampires. Granted, the people asking also like to ask why I write horror at all. I write horror because I must. Vampires . . . well, let’s just say they have a broader scope than other genre creatures like werewolves and zombies. As much as they seem done to death, countless new stories are possible. To me, only ghosts have a broader scope.

Now for a confession: The Vampire Way was nothing special at its conception. I was very young when I began writing it and I first tried to tell a run of the mill vampire tale. As I matured, the story blossomed into something much greater. Immortality has long been a word used in vampire fiction. I wanted the novel to endeavor to truly explore and understand it. To do that, I ramped up the role of the vampire depicted in the novel and even included some ‘Sympathy for the Devil’, so to speak. I doubt I spoiled any plot points by doing so. Really, I gave vampires a different dimension, a reason to side with the vampire who doesn’t sparkle.

Rick Thompson, my protagonist, is a human in the midst of a vampire attack, and has long yearned to understand immortality. Thanks to the vampire attacks, and the ensuing emotional fallout, he is able determine what immortality is.

No spoilers here. Rick endures an entire process to learn what immortality is. To do that, Rick faces some very dark circumstances. I’m often questioned about dark topics too. My response is that everyone encounters dark circumstances in their lives and fictional characters are no exception. By fighting vampires, Rick embarks upon a journey of self-discovery, maturity and strength. You could say that he couldn’t have become a better person had a vampire not walked into his life.

The good news is that the novel has a little something for everyone. For readers who demand a scary vampire I have given them . . . well, a scary vampire. The novel offers heady doses of emotion for the Twilight crowd. For those who love series books, this is the first of a three book series, so stay tuned.

The concept’s freshness is what you as a reader will have to decide. I love to hear from readers and I always respond to e-mails. Let me know if The Vampire Way uncovered new ground for you.
