Guest: Laura Kaye

Hey, welcome Laura Kaye to the hot seat today, who has some serious love for Zsadist going on.  But let's all celebrate Laura's own vampire series, The Vampire Warrior Kings!  Laura has a $10 GC for books to one lucky commenter who tells us about the one book you re-read most.

For the Love of Zsadist and Lover Awakened

I grew up on Stephen King and Anne Rice, so all things paranormal were my very favorite from as young as I can remember. It helps when you have a family that actively believes in ghosts, evil-eye curses, and angels, too. But of all the paranormal creatures, vampires were always my favorite and held the most fascination for me. I love their bloodlust, the way their needs for blood and sex go together, all the history they’ve seen and experienced firsthand, their incredible array of supernatural powers. I love their animalistic natures, that they can’t help but want and need to wrap themselves around you, sink their fangs into your skin, and take you. I also love the idea of the loneliness of immortality, and how that makes them tortured and sympathetic, despite their darkness. To me, vampires are simply the ultimate sexy bad ass!

And though I have a lot of favorite vampires, one had most gotten under my skin. One has most engaged my imagination. One has most made me wish vampires—and this one in particular—were real.

Zsadist, son of Ahgony, twin of Phury, warrior of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, from J.R. Ward’s Lover Awakened.

Here’s what J.R. Ward had to say about Zsadist: I must confess. Of all of the brotherhood, he was the one I loved first and he remains the one I love the most. For me, he is just the…one.

As a reader, I feel the same exact way. I love Zsadist because his scars ran the deepest, his sense of self was the most shattered, he felt the least worthy of love, his need for redemption was the greatest and his achieving of it the most powerful. And for all these reasons, Lover Awakened is my all-time favorite vampire romance. I have re-read it so frequently I no longer know the number of times. I have talked about it so much that my author friends no longer think it’s strange that I don’t like when they say they like Zsadist because, you know, as a bonded female and all, I just really can’t handle anyone else expressing their interest in him. *winks*

And, so, you can imagine how I apoplectically happy I was to have J.R. Ward sign a copy of Lover Awakened for me and made out to me! Squee! :bounce: ZOMG! :bounce: Gah! :bounce: Thud! LOL

So, now I have two copies of Lover Awakened. The reading copy. And the display copy. The pour over every word copy. And the protect within an inch of my life copy. The willing-to-throw-in-my-bag copy. And The. Copy. That. Must. Not. Be. Touched. Can you tell which is which?:

In my own vampire series, the Vampire Warrior Kings, my greatest goal is to have readers fall in love with Kael MacQuillan (In the Service of the King) and Nikolai Vasilyev (Seduced by the Vampire King), to make readers think about those characters long after they’ve read The End. Authors want nothing more than for readers to have an emotional reaction to our characters and our stories. And that’s most of all why I love Lover Awakened—because it has inspired me as a reader. If I’m even half as successful as Ward was with Zsadist, then I’ll have done my job. Until then, I’ll keep right on trying! *grins*

GIVEAWAY: $10 e-gift card to winner’s choice of or B&! Open to international! Comment with email address to enter to win. What to comment? Tell me which book you’ve most re-read and why!

Thanks so much for reading!

I loved reading your review of Lover Awakened. I've heard a lot about this series, but this is the book that caught my eye, and I've been hemming and hawing about whether or not I'll like it. The reviews are mixed. You've pretty much decided for me, so thanks for sharing that, Laura!

What book have I read the most. Years ago, my grandmother gave me a couple of books she was done reading, one of which was Diana Gabaldon's Outlander. I think I've read the first three or four in the series, but the first one is the one I go back to time and again. For me, it's the sweetness of the romance, of course, but also the way she builds the world. I get completely lost in it every time I read the book. Because that's why I read--for escapism, so every time I read this one, I get lost.

I love your cover, BTW!

Laura Kaye said...

Aw, yay, Joanne! I'm a huge fan of the BDB series (obviously!), so I definitely think you should give it a try! I have not yet read Outlander (gasp, I know!), but it's on the list! Thanks for sharing it's on your re-read list!

:) And thanks for kicking off the comments, Joanne!

Laura, I did not know you were carrying such a torch for Zsadist!!! So we have that in common, too!!! Please don't ZAP me for it!! ;) He is my all time love! He was the most tortured of all the brothers, almost of any Vampire I have come across, actually! But what REALLY had me thoroughly enamored by Z was how unbelievably sweet he was with Bella!! How he tried to not give in to his desires in order to save her from himself. While Bella practically threw herself at him by going to him at night and needing the safety that he represented to her, he still was telling her that wasn't what she really needed or wanted. **Sigh** Oh, if only Vamps such as Z existed I would be so there!!!

And, Yes, I can so tell which one you have read a gazillion times!!!!

Have a wonderful day and I think I will start your Vampire series while I wait for West of Want to come out! Still have to read HER FORBIDDEN HERO, too.

LOL Phyllis! How did we not realize this about each other??? Yes, the tenderness. How gentle he was when he believed that was the last thing he was. I can see you totally get it! ;)

And, yay! Happy reading! :)

Laura, I love what you say here about why vampires are so fascinating. I completely agree! Good thing I'm a Vishous girl, so we don't have to throw down!

Laura Kaye said...

@CrystalGB - Oh, will have to add to my TBR list! :)

@Sandy - another new one for me - thanks for the rec!

@Amber - LOL Seriously! I like Vishous, too, but Z is my male! ;)

Thanks for the great comments, guys!

Yes Z gets my heart racing. Hollywood is my favorite brother though. I don't reread many books, but would love to reread Kresley Cole's No Rest for the Wicked. Now that was a vampire on a mission.

LOL! I love that you've got two copies, Laura--I completely get that! I have a few books like that, too--one lovely signed one for the keeper shelf, and one that gets read and reread. One favorite is some of Shelly Laurenston's shifters--they crack me up, which I like in my rereads :)

I love the BDB series and Z has always been my favorite. Love that man.
I'm not a big fan of re-reading books, but there are some books that I just have to keep, all of the Brother's books are on that keeper shelf.

Alexis Morgan said...

I agree about Z. He was/is the most compelling of the Brothers. Despite his damaged nature, he still fought for his people and was capable of caring about others. One of my favorite moments is when he rides the bus home with John. That showed there was hope for him being able to move beyond the pain and find peace in his life.

@Fedora - right? It totally makes sense to have two copies! LOL

@Lil - will have to check that out!

@Brenna - oh, I definitely get the idea of keepers, even if you don't re-read!

@Alexis - first, squee! Thanks for commenting! Second, Yes! I love that scene on the bus, too. A lot of scenes between Z and John really touch me!

@Aubrie - another vote for that book! Must check it out!

@Alex - yay! Another BDB lover! :)

Thanks for all the fun comments everyone!

Rehvenge is mine, but I have a huge soft spot and love for Z. I think I want him to be the older brother I never had.

As for rereading, that's a toughie. I am a HUGE fan of rereading books and have done so all my life. I have favorites from childhood that I saved for my future kids and can't wait for my daughter to be old enough to read.

In recent years, the most reread are Harry Potter and Twilight. Though the BDB is moving up the list of most reread. :) Right now, I'm rereading the Vampire Academy series. I needed a fix of Dimitri Belikov.

throuthehaze said...

The book I have read the most is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Every time a new one came out I reread the one's that came before it. Every now and then I still reread the series :)

Lover Awakened is one of my favorite books. Ah, Zsadist! I have a tons of books on my keeper shelf but usually I try to let some time go by before a re-read. That way it comes back fresh or some scenes I forget can once again tug my heart. I'm planning on re-reading the Fever series soon.

Hi Laura! It has actually been a while since I have re-read a book, basically because there is always some awesome new boo out there for me to read. Once up[on a time though, when my type of reading material was not so readily avail, I used to read and re-read Maggie Shayne's books and Christine Feehan's books. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

Sharon said...

The book I've re-read most often is JR's Lover Unbound for many of the same reasons you mention about Z. I love all the brothers but V just stand out for me as such a screwed up and screwed over brother who so desperately needs some TLC. And I'd be more than happy to provide it *wink* I also have the latest BDB signed to me by JR, wrapped in tissue and only to be gazed upon by others from a distance LOL NO TOUCHY! Love your Vampire Warrior Kings and for anyone that hasn't read Laura's Forever Freed, do it! I want Lucien for Christmas ;D

Laura Kaye said...

@Stephanie - I'm dying for my 8 year old daughter to want to read Harry Potter. I think she is refusing right now because she knows I want her to so much! LOL

@throuthehaze - that's awesome! Thanks for sharing!

@Na - yes, I totally get what you mean!

@Barb - oh, yes, love both of those!

@Sharon - you take care of V, I'll take care of Z - how's that?? And thanks SO MUCH for the love for the Kings and Forever Freed! xoxo

Laura, ya know if I liked to argue, I'd have one word for you...MINE!! But...I DON', I'll just say...ME TOO, ME TOO!! I LOVE Zsadist...J.R. Ward is FAB. Lover Awakened and Envy are two books I could reread again and again and never tire of!! Adrian Vogel in her Fallen Angel series makes my heart thump too and if you haven't read this should pounce on it! ;)

LOL, Barbara! Well, we'll both have to restrain ourselves, won't we?! ;) And, yes, I'm enjoying the Fallen Angels, too!

While I don't tend to re-read, there are some that I have to have on my shelf! I could, however, read The League series by Sherrilyn Kenyon over and over, especially the last one, Born of Silence-Kere's story made me cry and laugh and ... well...yeah!

Kerry said...

I re-read a lot - I have re-read the Blood Destiny series by Connie Suttle a couple of times - Karen Marie Moning - Laurell K Hamilton - and the list goes on. I am a book hoarder LOL - so I get the copy that goes and the copy that is not to be touched!!

V.S. Morgan said...

I've read each of the BDB books at least two times, but I've read Z's book about ten. So dark and amazing how he grows/evolves. Something refreshingly different about a guy freaked out by his man parts too. ;)

Laura Kaye said...

@crystl - the keeper shelf! Yes, I definitely have one, too!

@Kerry - "book hoarder" - love it! :)

@Hootie - that's on my TBR list! :)

@Nicole - Love Gena's series!

Really enjoying all your comments, guys! Thanks!

The book I have reread the most is Jim Butcher's Storm Front, I am in love with Harry Dresden :O)

I am hooked line and sinker on paranormal romance and romantic suspense, but my love affair with the romance novel started with a couple of historical that I have read multiple times and I'll never grow tired of: A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux and Devil in Winter bu Lisa Kleypas.

Cylver said...

Hi Laura!I'm a Rhage girl myself. I just love him and his beast! And the sacrifice he made! And, you know, everything about him!
Another favorite reread is Darkness Everlasting, Styx's book from Alexandra Ivy's Guardians of Eternity series. I just love that vamp!

The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons! I've read it like 20 times and everytime I cried! It's that GOOD!

Laura Kaye said...

@V.S. - yes, I love that about his story, too! :)

@Carin - I have that on my nightstand!

@Mina - ooh, will have to try that one out!

@Cylver - I think Rhage is my second fave! He's just great! That moment on the phone call with Tohr when he tells him to stop teasing him about the women - love that!

@Gisele - will have to check that out!

Thanks for all the great comments, guys! :)

Great post, Laura, and I will definitely be checking out your book ASAP.

While I am a hardcore V fan, Z is my next-in-line. I love a guy who is a complete mess. :) His story was a shifting point in that series. He let us all know that Ward was not going to shy away from ANYTHING.

I would love a chance to win the book. Thanks!

Z is my favorite vampire of all that I've read! All that he has gone through and still have the ability to love is amazing! Much as I love Lover Awakened, to read his and Nala's relationship in Father Mine is awesome. From book one I always read with the anticipation of a scene with Zsadist in it!
