Joanne's post:

Hello, VampChix readers! My name is Joanne Brothwell and I’m the author of Stealing Breath, a paranormal romance by Crescent Moon Press. I live in the country on the Canadian prairie where my stories are inspired by the dead things that appear at my doorstep on a daily basis. Of course, my two pets, a retired police dog with titanium fangs and a feral barn cat missing two toes, make the safety of the surrounding wildlife, at best, uncertain.

I love the idea of the paranormal. Growing up, I always read my mother’s horror books, and basically was raised on a consistent diet of Stephen King, John Saul and Dean Koontz. Since then, my mind has always hovered between real life and an alternate reality where terrible, fantasticle things happen to average people!

My novel, Stealing Breath, came to me one day after talking to a friend. The whole concept of the Skinwalker was inspired by a story an Indigenous friend of mine told me of a time she was on a road trip in the US. It was the middle of the night and she was growing too tired to continue driving, so she pulled her car over to the side of the road, somewhere in Arizona near the “four corners” (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah). She planned to have a nap, but was startled awake when her car started rocking as if someone was jumping on her car, their mocking laughter outside sending shivers up her back. Quite abruptly it stopped, and when she spoke to some of her Navajo relatives later, they said these tricksters were Skinwalkers, people who practiced “Bad Medicine” and could perform astral-projection!

My mind started spinning, and soon after, characters began to form and flesh out in my mind, around this concept of the evil Skinwalkers.

Then came the idea of Sarah, an Indigo Child; a spiritually-evolved human based on the New Age concept of the “Indigo Child”.

I started thinking—would it be cool if this Indigo Child would be spiritually closer to God, with psychic abilities and a purple/blue aura? After the Skinwalker story, I began to think— if Skinwalkers can walk outside of their skin, can they walk inside the skin of another? If yes, can they steal the souls of their victims? If they can steal souls, wouldn’t they want a special purple/blue one that’s closer to God?

So there you have it. The early underpinnings of my first novel, Stealing Breath.

Blurb for Stealing Breath:

Deep in the backwoods of North Dakota, twenty-one year old Sarah Ross is searching for a missing child when she is attacked by a glowing-eyed, transparent creature known to the Navajo as a Skinwalker. Sarah survives, destroying the monster by using mysterious abilities she didn’t even know she had.

Bloody and bruised, Sarah flees the scene and runs directly into Evan Valente, a handsome, charismatic stranger who helps her back to safety. But what is Evan doing out in the forest at five in the morning?

Turning to a healer, Sarah is shocked to learn her eyes bear the mark of the Indigo Child—an evolved human with the ability to feel the emotions of others. But her indigo aura also makes her an easy target for those who wish to consume her powerful essence.

Soon, Sarah is falling deeply in love with Evan and wants nothing more than to follow her heart and trust that he is the man he says he is. But she can't ignore the lingering feeling that Evan is hiding a terrible secret. The deeper she digs, the more danger she faces, leading her on a course that will force her to face the darkest, innermost parts of her soul.

Discussion Question:

If you heard the above story about the Skinwalker from a friend of yours, would you believe Skinwalkers were real?
