She was a Dark Breed-half Vampyre, half Lychen. Now she is chosen . . . Kyana is the new Goddess of the Hunt, chosen for her determination to survive as much as for her passion to protect those she loves. Now, just when she's finally ready to shed her past and let the one man who really matters into her heart, an evil has resurrected, and only Kyana stands in its way. But Ryker, as the new Zeus, will not let her fight alone. It has taken him too long to convince Kyana they belong together for him to lose her. And if it means descending into the depths of Hades to make the ultimate sacrifice, then so be it. The fate of the world is at stake, and for Kyana and Ryker, no fight has ever been more personal.
I realized something as I closed the last page of this book, something that rarely happens when I'm reading for review. I forgot to take notes! The Dark Breed novels are new to me, so I checked the author site to get a quick rundown on the what was happening to who, and why, then immediately dove into my copy of Chosen. This is such a unique world, full of mythology and magic, good versus evil, light and dark, all designed to suck you in and make you feel as if the Gods are really watching.
My one word description for this book would be inventive. This isn't just an urban fantasy reboot filled with bored Gods and Goddesses, but an inventive twist where humans are chosen to take the place of Gods and protect the world from destruction. I enjoy reading strong central characters, and Kyana and Ryker definitely fit the bill. They have a solid emotional base, although Kyana struggles with her feelings quite a bit which sometimes gets in the way of her decision making, but nothing good is easy and her hesitation isn't so much about Ryker as it is with love in general. She is completely willing to sacrifice her life if necessary, but isn't comfortable with the idea of loving and being loved. A good book for anyone that enjoys strong urban fantasy with a dash of romance.
Before the Fall (prequel novella)
About the author:
Sable Grace is the writing team of Heather Waters and Laura Barone, long-time critique partners and friends who came together by fluke to discover their voices fit quite nicely during a writing experiment. The story became far too interesting to put down and Sable Grace was born. Both Heather and Laura reside in Florida, are happily married to their real-life heroes, and are, well, complete opposites. Still, there's enough common ground for them to weave their words together in the voice of Sable Grace.
