Review: Blood of Dawn

Book Description:

Being a skeptic is somehow making Sloan Skye one of the best profilers in the FBI's new Paranormal Behavioural Analysis Unit. True, her so-called love life isn't any less tangled, but she's beginning to believe she's found a place where her uber-geek smarts and her more out-there methods fit perfectly.

Unfortunately, all the incredible things she's seen can't prepare Sloan for the ultimate horror show ...returning to her old high school. Someone - or some thing - is draining blood out of local teenage girls while they sleep. And the only way Sloan can solve the case is to push past her training and surrender to powers beyond her formidable logic to root out one very elusive killer.

Review:

Think Criminal Minds meets Grimm meets Lost Girl. I'm not kidding, it's that cool. Blood of Dawn really surprised me with it's original and inventive storyline, not to mention that Sloan has one very messed up love life. Sloan is an intern with PBAU, the FBI's Paranormal Behavioral Analysis Unit, only her natural talent and her eidetic memory have helped solve the last 2 cases with a speed that her direct superiors have come to rely on. Her most recent case has her going undercover in hell on earth, aka a local high school, and Sloan places herself in extreme danger as she gets too close to discovering who and what the killer really is.

Dane does an excellent job with the pacing, moving between Sloan's personal adventures (a Slaugh Prince on a reality dating show looking fro a bride, the courtship of an Elven Prince, her pregnant mother and recently returned father, partners acting out of character) and her professional duties which prevents the story from getting to heavy into the procedural or buried in unnecessary details. I would probably recommend reading the other 2 books but I honestly didn't have any trouble following along so it isn't a necessity.
