It's not every day that Elsa Bjornberg feels delicate, not when she hosts a home renovation show where she can effortlessly demolish a kitchen. But from the moment she meets Howard Barr, this bear of a man makes her feel like a woman. And the way he looks at her, as if she were a pot of honey he'd like to lick...
Howard is not like most men. For one thing, he's a shapeshifter. And he always thought his celebrity crush would never amount to anything more than drooling at Elsa on TV. When his meddling vampire employer gets involved, the star is suddenly within his grasp—and within a hair of her life. For an ancient curse forbids their newfound love, and Howard is suddenly torn between his desire for her and his desire to keep her alive.
Anytime an author writes a long standing series they run the risk of becoming repetitive but Sparks fans need not worry because Wild About You is just as fun as her earlier work. It was a nice change of pace that along with our favorite vampires we also get more from the shifters, particularly bear shifters.
Howard is a really romantic guy and believes in love at first sight, even if that look is on the television and some might find it stalker-ish that he has recorded every show his new love interest has ever done, all in the name of affection. Elsa has spent many years guarding herself because of her statuesque appearance, but once she meets Howard its obvious that she doesn't need those defense mechanisms any longer because he is her soulmate in every way. He makes her feel safe, protected and cherished. She gives him a purpose and makes him see that life isn't all about curses and revenge.
What I liked best about this book is that we get more from the Dragon Nest Academy and we also get to see how Shanna has grown to accept her new vampire life. These are two things that have sort of held the series together, aside from Romatech, and since all the couples are having babies it seems like the logical course to start following the shifters now. Wild About You marks the 13th book in the longstanding Love at Stake series and I enjoy revisiting older characters while learning more about others in the group. This is a fun afternoon read, light and funny, with a healthy dose of romance.
