DNF: The ones we did not finish

We make it a policy here at VampChix to not trash on an author's hard work, but that doesn't mean that we love every book that is sent our way either. I've tried over the years to showcase and feature books of all types, and big name authors get the same attention that a self-pubbed author might get, because for Jenny and I, it's all about the books! We might not post negative reviews at this blog, but we will generate a post regarding the books we did not finish.

Why? Every reader is different, so while these books may not have worked for us, with varying reasons ranging from lack of editing to being part of a series we have not started yet, they might be something that others enjoy. Another reason we post the DNF's is so that we can sometimes offer up the books in a contest format (with author permission, if possible) for a special guest reviewer to get a chance to read the book and send me their thoughts, which often times differ from mine. I strive for honesty in all the reviews being done and sometimes a fresh voice is all that's needed.

Anna and Jenny's current DNF list:

*I would love to start at the beginning of this series, because I enjoyed Sandra Hill's Navy Seal time traveling Rough and Ready and Down and Dirty, but at the moment I just don't have the time! I've started Kiss of Temptation twice now but I just can't get into the Viking vampire mindset, and I know Sandra Hill writes some wickedly sexy Vikings. If anyone is interested in guest reviewing, please send me an email and I will send the book on a first come first served basis. This is a series that I really think deserves that second look.~Anna

Ivak Sigurdsson is dead...well, sort of. Guilty of the sin of lust, he’s been given an unusual penance: spend eternity as a Viking Vampire Angel, or Vangel, fighting Lucipires, Satan’s vampire demons on earth. Now sequestered in Angola Prison as a “spiritual advisor,” Ivak is finding all these centuries of celibacy depressing, to say the least. But then, along comes southern belle Gabrielle Sonnier. Is she a reward for his good deeds, or a temptation sent to rattle his lustsome brain?

Gabrielle, a lawyer, begs Ivak to help get her brother out of prison. Aided by the Cajun LeDeux family and their chief looney bird, Tante Lulu, Ivak reluctantly agrees. And while he alternately tries to seduce and save Gabrielle before the Lucipires run rampant, they both begin to wonder if it’s really only lust, or something more.

* The concept of having the story begin with the protagonist being a child and then flashing forward was intriguing, but the third person writing style made the strange, twisting plot difficult to follow. ~Jenny

In a bazaar in Istanbul one evening, ten-year-old Alana Piovanetti sees a man standing in the shadows. He smiles, and over time she convinces herself that it was just her imagination that placed sharp fangs amongst those flashing teeth.

Twelve years later, Alana is surprised when she is chosen to manage a new restaurant opening in her home city of San Juan. She has neither training nor experience to justify her success. But La Cueva del Vampiro has the kind of ambience she adores, for Alana has always had a penchant for horror and the dark side of life. Yet she is also plagued with dreams of dark sensuality, dreams that take on shattering reality when she meets the stunningly handsome, charismatic Sadash.

For Sadash is the man she saw in the shadows so many years before…and Sadash isn’t human…

*The premise of secret warriors led by Scimitar Magi is a fresh concept in the paranormal genre and the lore behind these characters is highly detailed, but for us, the plot was just too confusing. ~Anna and Jenny

In the shadows of our world, a secret band of warriors fights to protect us. They are the last line of defense against an evil no human can stop.

An ancient nemesis has resurfaced. Duty demands that Ashor Vlahos, Scimitar Magi commander, recruit a magical healer to fortify the remaining eight magi. The gods' choice is the woman who helped him escape torture a decade ago. Ashor couldn't have imagined a better punishment for his vow-breaker homicidal incidents than for the gods to bind him irrevocably to the only woman in the universe he cannot have. The soul-searing desire she ignites in him is strictly forbidden.

Kira Hardy, M.D. is a brilliant, hardworking internal med resident with big secrets. But when Ashor asks for aid after a brutal daemon attack, she is sucked into his dangerous, secret world. Enslavement to the magi, no matter how hot they are, may be an unattractive life plan, but being targeted for death by their enemies is less tolerable.

She must trust the sexy, tormented Ashor to keep her safe while he must deny his ultimate desire and keep Kira at arm's length lest he bring destruction down on them both. As a centuries-old evil catches up to them, they face a crucial decision--follow the gods' rules or follow their hearts.
