Angie's Review:

This is the beautifully creepy story of Aurora Grimeon. She is a normal girl, but she's been plucked out of her normal life and sent to live with her bizarre grandfather on a graveyard island where hoodoo is king and a ghost from her family's past is out for revenge. Aurora may have survived mushroom poisoning only to be killed by an evil spirit- that is, if she can't learn to make a proper gris-gris or cast a protection spell. The story is suspenseful and playful and full of magic and eerie settings, unusual characters and an adorable and protective pet raccoon. I really enjoyed it.

The content is suitable for middle school and up, in my opinion. There is some violence although not terribly graphic, and there is no explicit content. But don't think this graphic novel is just for kids. I enjoyed it a lot. In fact, in some ways it reminded me of Neil Gaiman's children's books. Like The Graveyard Book or Coraline, you have a child trying to maneuver a sinister world of spirits and powerful forces beyond the comprehension of most adults.

The artwork is very stylized and appropriately Gothic and creepy. Some reviewers said that they found it too simplistic, but I disagree. I loved the look of this book and found it to be very compatible with the story. I also think the style will appeal to younger readers especially, and that of course, is their target audience. But you can take a look at some of the pages I have included here and judge for yourself if you think it's for you or your child.

I give it 4 stars.
