5 Things I Love About The Characters In Summoned

While plot and writing style are important to a story, it's usually the characters that make or break it. And I think it's a given writers love their characters. Okay, when we're not busy despising them while working on the fifteenth editing pass at two am.

That aside, I do love the characters in Summoned, and here's five points why.

Dimitri's voice. Writing Dim is way too much fun. If I had to describe his voice, it would be, “He talks like he's read too much Urban Dictionary—probably because he has.” I enjoy pulling out all the colorful, albeit often crude or simply goofy, phrases as he tries to process his world.

Dimitri's resignation. I think it's too easy to fall into the trap of characters being indifferent to killing. It takes a special mindset and conditioning to become truly apathetic, and even more difficult if the murders are without consent. Dimitri doesn't have any choices in what he has to do, and he knows it. Even accepted it. But his resignation is not to be confused with being hardened.

Dimitri's resourcefulness. While he's a series of epic failures, Dimitri still manages to use his wits—and the Internet—to save himself from catastrophes. Well, mostly.

Syd's inner bad ass. Syd is the hot chick from the bar and nothing more. For a while. But as her involvement in Dimitri's life grows, so does the revelation that she's not just a bad ass in the bedroom. Still, like Dim, she's not a seasoned fighter. Her strength comes from her motivation.

Silvia's skewed sense of the world. Silvia Walker is the next in line to inherit Dimitri, and boy, does she have plans for him. Having grown up in a sheltered world inside the mansion estate, Silvia's life revolves around her plans for the future, all of which include Dimitri in roles he doesn't want to fulfill. Her naivety makes it possible for him to control the situation, but he's fast losing the reigns.

The Summoned cast might be a little unconventional, but they are a blast to write and, hopefully, to read.

Twenty-three year old Dimitri has to do what he is told—literally. Controlled by a paranormal bond, he is forced to use his wits to fulfill unlimited deadly wishes made by multimillionaire Karl Walker.

Dimitri has no idea how his family line became trapped in the genie bond. He just knows resisting has never ended well. When he meets Syd—assertive, sexy, intelligent Syd—he becomes determined to make her his own. Except Karl has ensured Dimitri can't tell anyone about the bond, and Syd isn't the type to tolerate secrets.

Then Karl starts sending him away on back-to-back wishes. Unable to balance love and lies, Dimitri sets out to uncover Karl's ultimate plan and put it to an end. But doing so forces him to confront the one wish he never saw coming—the wish that will destroy him.
